  • First Carputer, ready to get started...almost

I'm considering building a starter PC for my car with things I have around the house.
    Any suggestions connecting the dots.

MP3's, DVD's, Navigation Software, Satellite Radio and of course Internet Access at minimum…..possibly speech recognition .

I'm defiantly going to be using a touch screen, still trying to decide which one. I would like to put screens in the headrest for my son to play the PS2 (I'm going to add a HD to this weekend) and watch movies.

Here are the things I've found, no jokes please I know this stuff is old…..okay I love the sarcasm but I would like useful input.

I have an IBM x30 laptop
    I have a Dell 814XP desktop PC
    I have a Gateway Minitower, Perf 866
I have a PC I built a long time ago with a ASUS CUSL2-C Motherboard, I think it has a 1.4gz PIII processor
I have a ASUS P4b266-C with a 1.8ghz chip, but I think the board can hold up to a 2.4ghz chip
Various size hard drives, 40gig 120gig 200g ect..
I have various DVD Players, CDRW's ect, I'm thinking I need a video card and sound card(open to suggestions), I know I need more memory.
I need to select a dc-dc converter (open to suggestions)

HELL I’M OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS, I READ SO MANY POST I CANT MAKE UP MY MIND ABOUT ANYTHING. I'M ON A BUDGET.

I would like to get started without buying all new parts, the ultimate goal is to eventually buy a MINI ITX motherboard, but right now.. I'm on a budget.

Case size and location in the car will have to be considered first. Choose a front end software that has the features you like. Do like I did, download several and try them out. There are a few power supplies out there designed for this type of application. Most of these have controls for shutting down the PC properly and regulating the 12V from your vehicle. I prefer the M1-ATX power supply, but then again, it best suited my needs for my case size and location. As for hard drive, the bigger the better, to store movies and MP3's. GPS will require additional hardware and map software. USB GPS receivers can be purchased on eBay $40-45. Microsoft Mappoint works well with this type of receiver. Again, front end software will play a big role in determining what will work with what you have.

This is my 2 cents worth considering I have working on mine now for 3 months. Just about done, but having do a few more minor tweaks before installing.
