"what you will need" is a general understanding of all the aspects of installing a carpc.....

you will need a basic understanding of power supplies & the options there... you will need a basic idea on fabrication.... you will need a basic understanding of wiring & electrical interfaces & conections... you will need to consider equiptment choices & spaces to mount them & mounting options.... basically you will need to read & learn....

start with the FAQ's & then browse individual forums for specifics of the various aspects of installations.... look at the problems some are having & realize what there mistakes were & what you can do to aviod the same mistakes...... the first mistake your making is thinking that any one person can just answer your question.....

youe pc will only come out as good as the amount of research you put into it beforehand, there is no way any one answer can do much, except an answer such as this

A picture of your dash may help.

Having just gone through this, my short list:

Operating system, Motherboard, ram, hard drive, case, power supply, screen (touchscreen or not), soundcard if the mobo either didn't come with it or it isn't good enough.

Optional: wifi, bluetooth, keyboard, mouse, usb hub, gps receiver, gps software, fm tuner, temperature probes, obdII interface for your car, maybe a power inverter if you think you'll need ac power for something, media to play on carpc.

Choices you can make without having any of this:

      1. Frontend. Easily the hardest and most involved part, unless you think the o/s is a harder choice. I love linux, but the options for mobile media just aren't there (IMHO) yet. You can just install this onto your regular desktop pc to get a feel for what you like. I wish I would have thought about this earlier, then I could have gotten started much sooner.

      2. Skin for said frontend. Lots of options.

This is a VERY short list. I just started doing my software install this week, so a lot of these thoughts are fresh in my mind. Hopefully you'll find this stuff helpful.

You've got two options. You can either buy one of the pre-built systems that are appearing on the market or make your own.
If you want to make your own, you need to get over your fear of being confused when searching. You need to learn to do some reading and learn some new skills. That's never a bad thing, but it takes time.
If you don't have the time to spare, I suggest the pre-built setups that you just wire up, install software and go.

However some of the functionality you want is going to require some cusotm configuration, hardware hacking and the like. You really need to stop, take a deep breath, and start reading in the FAQ Emporium. You can also look in the Worklogs to see how others have documented their installations. Lastly, the Show Off Your Project area has photos of completed installations. A lot of people have put a lot of time and effort into some very creative solutions. It's anotehr great source of ideas.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
            How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

you can do anything, from an old $35 p100 desktop, to the latest greatest dual core obviously.... what suits you may not suit others, it is up to you to decide what you can live with & what you can afford.....

you want someone to tell you what to do?, O.K., I would tell you to use a pentium m laptop.... it's MY favorite configuration & it'll give you plenty of processing power without drawing excesive power from the vehicle, but that doesn't mean that 10 other guys won't come in here & tell you to do 10 different things..... some guys love mini itx, others will tell you the best solution is a via board, still others will tell you to put a big powerfull p4 in there..... in the end it doesn't matter what anyone tells you, you have to decide what will work for you, it's not a matter of what can & can't be done, ANYTHING can be done within reason.....

I could sit here & spec out a whole system for you, research part #'s & give you a list of costs (not that I would do that), & in the end you could tell me, oh, but I don't want to spend that much.....

someone else could come in here & spec out a nice cheap system to get you going & you may come back with, that's not powerfull enough for what I want to do.....

I hate to tell you this, but if after all your searching your still in the dark, I'd suggest more research!!! either that, or put a pentium m laptop in
