  • Integrating backup camera w/ installed notebook pc

I have a fire/rescue truck which has a rugged notebook pc (with touch screen) installed on a Jotto Desk mount. This is used for GPS navigation with MS streets & trips as well as internet, email, word, etc. I need to be able to connect a backup camera to the pc and be able to switch between the camera and the gps easily.

Any suggestions as to how this can be accomplished will be greatly appreciated. This arena is new to me and I'm not sure where to begin.

    Thanks,

Use a webcam that has the ability to reverse the image.

The camera is not an issue, I can find plenty of flush mount backup cams. But the output is RCA (I believe) and so getting the video into the notebook happens how?

that's definatley the easiest way, but webcams aren't really outdoor friendly, or low light friendly...

there are add in units that can take a video feed in through usb..... this combined with a higher end rearview camera should give better results that will last better being outside....

That's why I said to use a webcam, not a backup camera.
To utilize a backup camera with RCA video out, you'll need some piece of hardware that will accept RCA video signal in.

DP, do you have any recommendations for some kind of usb device that will convert the signal?

TC, I see where you're going, but a webcam won't hold up.

Ok, great, so it seems the RCA-USB hardware is readily available.

So now I have to find a 'front end'. I'm reading the poll thread right now.

One last question, does anyone know if usb 1.1 will be sufficient or will it require usb 2.0?

listen, i am actually selling what you need in my FS thread. It teh USB 2.0 video grabber. Its cheaper than you'll find it anywhere. I hope this helps. Some of by best friends are firefighters/EMS drivers.

also search for pcmcia or pc card video capture. this will be faster (smoother video) than your usb 1.1

I wondered about that. That's what I'm leaning towards. Thanks
