  • my general question regarding the carputer setup

prior to register to the forum I've read many many posts and was amazed many member's work!!! I am really interested in this carputer setup and thinking about setting up one myself. I've built many computers myself but not so experienced in hooking it with other car components.

I have some questions and hoping some one can verify/answer for me:

    1. Do most of you even boot up the system during the short drives? (getting grocery, etc)

    2. To increase the boot time, most choose to to standby or hibernate. Do you have to do this everytime (even to shutdown) manually after you shut off the car?

    3. How do those OEM devices achieve the instant on upon turning the key to "Acc" power and just take the key out to safely shut off the device?

#1. Many people have an override switch for their ACC. So on short drives, they switch it off so when you start the car, your startup/shutdown controller or computer never gets the response that the car is on.

#2 Standby/hibernate DECREASES boot times. Again, a lot of people use a startup/shutdown controller which dictates what happens when the engine turns off.

#3 Their carputers are very much slimmed down in terms of computing capacity. It's just like if you have an aftermarket HU. The functions are readily available because it's only starting certain things. Many people have acheived fast boot times by slimming down what is starting and what takes priority.

Yes, boot times can be tweaked to be short.

      welcome to the forums!

      btw - I don't use hibernate or stand-by. I shut down completely.
