  • 2010 STi in-dash pc

    Hi guys,
    Been toying with the idea of an in dash pc, and found out it's an old idea after googling for a bit. I already put together a parts list and am putting it up here to see if anyone knows some substitutes that will help me cut costs, or sees some obvious screw ups. This will be the third PC I've built from scratch, and I have a buddy that has built 20+ platforms who will be helping me troubleshoot and program it.

    My goal is simple, I want a setup that has:
    -GPS
    -Touch input
    -Decent sound quality
    -Data logging
    -gauge display (boost, EGT, etc)

    The setup will fit completely into the double din slot and retain an OEM appearance, as the only real reason to build this as opposed to buying a NAV unit is to gain performance data support.

    I look at your pricing and wonder if this would not be a better idea for you as it would give alot built-in and includes most of what you are looking for, I am only offing this as a suggestion as i have no hands on with this. http://chinagrabber.com/double-din-7...r-pc-2270.aspx But in future i will be going this route and adding the extra's i want, which won't be much as most are built in just obd2 bluetooth dongle, tpms and software SNO

      Thanks for the suggestion, but I most likely wont go that route. As Stated in the OP, the only reason why I'm making the leap into the PC realm for this car is performance data. There is probably a way to hook up and OBDII and program it with the interface they're using, but from what I'm seeing now, the cost involved with making their setup log data would bring the cost to around $1100, and I have not seen any site that shows the quality of internals being used. Also, they're using an 8GB SSD and the option of coupling that with a 160GB mechanical HD is an additional $40. Unless I'm missing some stellar reviews on this model, I'm feeling like this is not the way to go.

        I guarantee that you won't be able to cram all that in your dash.
        Your best bet is to have the PC itself somewhere else (glove box, center console, under a seat, etc.) and have the screen in the dash.
        Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
        How about the Wiki?

          I was thinking of atleast putting the optical drive in the glovebox for access. Thanks for the advice.

                Yeah, but I still want to try to strip down the case and get it in there. I'd rather not have to worry about extra cabling and such. Although if the cabling proves to be easy, it would be beneficial to have it mounted out of the dash for dismounting it.

                  If your main interest is performance data and you have a Subaru, you should do your data logging and dashboard display of ecu parameters using the Subaru Select Monitor (SSM) protocol. SSM will let you display Subaru-specific parameters in additional to normal OBD parameters and at a higher data rate. An ELM-based OBD reader and the DashCommand software won't be able to do that.

                  I'd recommend a Tactrix cable and RomRaider software. This will also allow you to tune your car and reflash your ecu, when you get to the modding stage. There is a new SSM gauge display program called ECUTrackerSE that looks promising. Search for it in the Engine Management section.

                    Thanks for the help! Now I just have to find a tactrix cable. RomRaider will have to wait, I have a cobb AP. I wonder if there is a way to link the Cobb cable straight to the in car pc. Then I'd have two components that I wouldnt have to buy.

                      Now I'll just have to link up with my buddy and figure out how to put a module into my front end. This piece of software is pushing me away from centrafuse, and I'm now thinking about roadrunner. I'm going to need to be able to interface this software with my front end, and I'm not too sure about how that is going to work with centrafuse.

                        So.... Apparently the cobb accesstuner race software interfaces with the COBB AP, which I already have... so I might not need the software or the cable...

                            I'm running a N/A (non-turbo) 2003 (2002 body shape) B4. Gets better gas mileage in a country that has 60 kpm speed limits!!!

                              Anyone have an opinion on the quality of zotac motherboards? Saw a 0+1 raid one that interests me, and I'm debating whether I want to get a prebuild nettop since I really dont need a permanent optical drive in the car. Thanks.
