CarPC install in the planning/development stages.

The kicker of it all: I'm removing the factory head unit and keeping climate control!
"Impossible!" you say, but here's the plan. Another newbie member here gave me the spark of inspiration for this. I'd help him develop his, but he is doing this project with the LX model & doesn't have the dual-zone climate control. By reverse-engineering the board for the original head unit from the car, I'm hoping to eliminate all nonessential traces and components, including the LCD. While it would be neat to keep an LCD intact, it would require an understanding of what I'm told is proprietary code used to talk to the screen itself. I could use the original screen but it's far too big as it is made to display much more than the climate settings. I will rely on the LEDs accompanying the buttons and forgo the temp setting (this makes me a little sad).

Anyway, I'm still working on design but I'm looking to take the head unit, the storage bin and the coin tray/lighter piece out to make space for a single unit housing the PC itself. I may put the hard drives in the trunk.

I'll post a sketch of the current design later.

PC: I'm considering a Lenovo netbook with a broken screen my friend might be able to give me. I can dissemble the guts of it and hope that it can fit in the form factor I'm aiming for (inside the dash).
Screen: I'm leaning towards a Lilliput 8" touchscreen.
HDD: I'll use either the 40GB drive from my PS3 or the drive from the Lenovo until I can spring for a SSD or two.
Input: in addition to the touchscreen I'm thinking of hardwiring a small keyboard into the console. Initially I was thinking it would do well to sit behind the shifter, but I may mold it just under the climate controls on the dash. I can use bluetooth if I need to do lots of comfortable typing

Any thoughts, feedback, suggestions? I'm open to anything.

Also: if anyone with a spare dual-zone climate control head unit from a 2003-2007 accord can possible open it up and take hi-res pics of the mainboard, I'd like to use it for comparison to my hybrid unit. If this goes well and they are the same, then my PCB will be available for purchase to any who are interested (just because of the website I'll be going through to order one)

    very cool idea!

another way i have thought about doing cars with integrated screens like that, is to keep the original mainboard, and solder wires onto the lcd pixel traces-- this way, you are only dealing with the pixels-- which are only 'on', or 'off', and not the proprietary code..

that general idea popped into my head. Really, what I'm hoping to do is map the temperature for each side to small 2-digit LCDs, if possible. Do you think that is worth the effort?

"worth the effort" is relative-- afterall, many would just install a aftermarket radio and be done with it ...

if you feel it is worthwhile, then that is enough reason..
