  • Finally Starting My CarPC

So it is decided, I'm pulling out my OEM Nav, selling it on eBay and using the funds to assist in my PC build.

I'm posting here for some help on the components and maybe a slap in the face if I'm running in the wrong direction for some things.

I want to start with the Zotac ZBOX HD-ND02-U Barebones system. *PURCHASED*

SSD: Gotta go solid here, Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB*PURCHASED*

    RAM: Crucial 4GB 2x2GB Kit*PURCHASED* 2GB

Optical Drive: Dell CA10N slot load blu ray drive *PURCHASED*

GPS: not a ton of research done here yet. Input is welcome. What is the one most people go with that works really well?

    Display: Lilliput FA1011-NP/C/T 10.1"

For power I was wondering if I could modify the OEM power supply for the ZBOX to accept DC input. Is this practice unsafe? Will I need a regulator of some sort?
I know there is more stuff I need but this will be enough to keep me busy/get me started.

If anyone else has purchased that monitor already, I'd like to know the dimensions without the bezel, if possible.

Zacate are the new hotness? This is certainly appealing and would give me a slot-load blu-ray, an extra 250GB drive, 2GB of RAM (one less thing to buy) ... you might be on to something. The extra cost seems to balance out. What's the performance difference between the two processors?

At the moment, no one seems to have the ZBOX AD03BR-U in stock, barebones or not, that system is either not out yet or selling like hot cakes.

Hmmmmmmmm....my Dell gives you all that and more, w/an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.13Ghz as well as SSD, which you're wanting, looking @ your build. I also have the cigarette lighter adapter so you can hard wire it in, if you're interested. It's DIN sized once you remove the plastic.

My whole point is that it'll do what needs to be done w/aplomb, there are others using it w/out issue, and it is a robust and hardy machine. For an all in one setup, it's a pretty good option. But I'm not partial or anything *lol*

As far as power usage: http://www.desktopreview.com/default.asp?newsID=453
At idle, the system only consumed between 27 and 30 Watts of electricity. Even while decoding 1080p video, the computer used only 40 Watts of power.
According to Xenarc, the 706TSA in my sig uses ~25w, so I'd have to say that the Studio fares pretty well.

Well... I'm looking for a cost-effective mini that won't kill my battery when the car is off & as far as startup/shutdown goes, I can use something to control that, correct? I really like the Zotac ZBOX with the slot-load blu-ray drive. I tried to do some research on power consumption between the Ion ZBOX and the Zacate ZBOX. Does anyone have this in an apples-to-apples comparison? Price is a factor too.

Optical drive: Dell CA10N slot-load blu-ray drive from XPS laptop. It is SATA interface, so it should work in my build, right?

I got a broken radio so I have my bezel ready to hack up. No reports on the dimensions of that new 10" lilliput with the case removed?

that depends on where you will be installing the pc in relation to the dvd drive--according to wikipedia, the max allowable length of standard sata wires is 1m, or 3.3 ft

                          Thanks, Soundman.

My concern was the compatibility, because it is a laptop slot-load drive, I was a little worried that it may have proprietary wiring. I just won that device on eBay, picked up the original ZBOX I mentioned (the Zacate version is VERY hard to find locally), a 64GB SSD & 2GB RAM. I'm gonna test it out on a spare monitor I have and see if I can get it all going. The lilliput will have to wait for me to sell my nav system.

                            Closing this thread...

Since I'm at the point of actually working on this project, I'm starting a worklog thread. I'm at the software stage because I want the PC to work before I put it into the car, but I'm salivating to get started on the fabrication.
