    Yes I finally got my m2-atx to survive an engine crank.
    I had to wire up a 1 Farad capacitor in line with the battery input.
    Works like a charm.

    I thought the wide input on these units (6V - 24V) meant they can handle an engine crank anyway? Well thats what thier product page says anyway...

      wow that is awesome. So to reiterate, you put a 1F capacitor inline with the positive coming from the battery to the m2-atx ? I don't know much about electronics but which leg of the capacitor is suppose to face the battery and which side faces the m2?

      Once in a while my computer resets during crank but i could never determine what caused it. I'd say 50% of the time it works.

      I figured it was just something to do with me cheaping out and buying a M2 over an Opus.

        Yeah, I'll take having to put a capacitor in-line with the PS than to wait for 10 seconds for the damn thing to start. I have an Opus case (which I love) with the built-in Opus power supply (which I hate).

        My carputer screen is not built-in yet, it just connects through the Aux input of my factory stereo. If I decide to actually make it look pretty, I'm going to have to swap out the PS for sure.

          You shouldn't have to do that to get it to survive engine crank.

          What is your setup, and please, be specific about the wire lengths and gauge size.

            The M2-ATX is suppose to survive engine crank, but I have never seen it work. My battery is less then 1 year old...so I know it's not a battery problem.

              Good idea

              You know putting a 1MF cap in front of the PS is a good idea. It would feed a constant voltage to it the only problem that i could see would be if the battery voltage droped and the PS couldn't see it due to the caps but i could be wrong on that. I have been using caps for years and they work great to take the presure off the battery and the hard hitting subs to feed the amps that quick power. I'm torn between buying a m2 atx or the DSATX PS i have a m11 1200 mini board from VIA. UGGGGHHHH its driving me crazy which one to buy.

                There is one negative side and one positive side on a capacitor, the negative goes to the ground (chassi) and the positive to battery +. But if you don´t know that much about electronics it would be safest for you to have it installed instead of you doing it yourself since you can make quite a mess if you put the cables wrong. But here is a picture for your help

                  Exactly hooking one of these bad boys up wrong will make for a bad day for you and the PS. I've seen a 1MF cap pop and it was like a firework explosion went off. But me and a few buddies did it and it scared the hell out of us.

                    Do you guys think a placing a 1 Farad cap will be enough for a Head Unit and the M2-ATX to survive an engine crank? My computer and monitor is probably only pulling ~40Watt.

                    This might be a stupid question, but can a capacitor be safely mounted in the engine bay?

                      No cranking problems

                      Just for the record: On my set up in a Y2K Corvette, the M2-ATX does a fine job. The wake up and shutdown function work as they should AND I can crank the engine with the computer running and everything is happy (the computer does not reboot or lockup).

                        get a decent battery my m2 has worked flawlessly for years, have a gold bosch with 660 cca always survives crank, plus those caps are a disaster waiting to happen, try a tank circuit/ leisure battery safer and more reliable.
