  • Opus - Installed

    Greetings Group.

I think I might be the first to receive my OPUS from Opus Solutions in this forum.

Friend of mine (freestyler) hooked it up for me last night. We don't have it hooked to the ignition as of yet, but we have the rest of it working. We powered the ignition line off another line for testing purposes. It does exactly what its suppose to do. Once we took power away from that ignition line, in roughly 30 seconds the computer was powered down. Default is 10 seconds for it to send the signal, I think it does that correct, it just takes a bit until its successfully shut down. Simply give power to the ignition line again and whalla...its on.

So now..another test we did. Cranking while computer is one. We had my computer running off just my battery....(truck wasn't running) for a good 30-45 minutes, and I still tried to turn the truck on and the computer didn't even glitch through the crank. It stayed running perfectly.

So all in all this is a SWEET *** supply and I think this is really what I needed.

Now I just have to finish the rest of my setup. Freestyler has been a lot of help to my system helping me run wires and such. My whole interior of my durango is tore apart right now. Hopefully I can finish a big chunch of the system this weekend.

We have to run the line to the ignition switch yet, I have to run a USB cable, and fix a few more cable runs and such.

can you start up the computer while the ignition line is off?

      Currently I don't have....

Currently I don't have it connected to the ignition switch so yes I can power it on when my truck is off. Once I do connect it to the ignition switch I will not be able to do that until I build some sort of a relay. Freestyler was going to helpme with that. I am a full fledged computer and techy geek, just don't know squat about power and such.

This is what i was thinking, excuse the crude drawing

This way if you throw the switch the trigger wire always has power, otherwise it will go off the ignition, so it would work both ways.

I did that with a previous install, many moons ago. Although I just used a heavy duty SPDT switch to power the headunit, as everything else powered up from its trigger wire.

I dont think you were the first one to get the Opus supply. I got mine about 2 months ago. I know for a fact that someone else had it before I bought mine. Kris helped me out a lot. He answered all of my questions. I told him that there are a lot of people in need of this power supply and that I will send them to him.

You dont have to use relays for your setup. You have buy an on-off-on switch. Dont get the toggle switch that can accidently poke your eyes out. Get the Rocker switch. It looks better. There are 3 pins on the back of the on-off-on switch. Anyway you look at it, the top prong connect to Acc, center prong goes to the yellow wire of the Opus supply and the bottom prong goes to contant 12V. Then you have the switch on top, the computer turns on when you turn on the car. When the switch is in the middle position, the computer wont turn on (kind of like a valet switch), When the switch is on the bottom position, the computer turns on with out the key. When I first hooked it up, the power supply freak me out b/c I gave power to the yellow wire but the computer didnt turn on. Then 10 seconds later it started up.

                Update

Sorry if I offended you "cproaudio". I meant to say one of the first on this board. I know of several people who ordered them but handn't gotten theirs yet and I ordered after them. I will proof my message next time and hopefully I will not make a mistake like that again. (spoken with sarcasm)

I ended up not using relays. Freestyler set it up for me using a toggle switch and a few diodes and tied the switch into my fuse panel and everything. (How.... I don't know, ask him hehe I am not good with power, circuits, etc I am a computer geek, not a electrical geek.)

(When the switch is off, it runs off the ignition)
(When the switch is on, it over rides the ignition switch)

                Simple as that.

                Scenerio:
Turn Truck on....computer is fully booted in approx 25-30 seconds.

Going to fill up with gas. Pull up to the gas station and switch the over ride switch ON. This will keep the computer running past the (10 second shutdown that I have it set to). Then I start my vehicle back up, and then switch the over ride switch off. (Computer stays running while cranking engine....)

Go to work....Turn the car off, and in a total of 15 seconds, the OPUS tells my computer to close programs, and shutdown the computer properly.

                It works out pretty slick.

                Definately worth the money!!

Special thanks to Freestyler! My system is actually finally getting there. We had pretty much my whole interior side panels ripped off this weekend. Lots of fun.

i'm always up for ripping apart car's interiors and doing crap to them! hehe

it does work nicely, i'll prolly do the same in the jeep eventually, i wish i could just get remote start though also, that would be nice.
