  • Low power , What is the best alternitave ???

Month ago i built my Carpc with the flowing items :

    1- Mini-ITX Motherboard JNC62K

    2-Western Digital HHD 80GB .

    3-Lilliput 8-Inch

And unfortunately That system is powered by M2-ATX . The screen has separate power resource . It boots fine and if I'm working with out connecting anything ( Like the GPS and The bluetooth units ) It works but with alot of black lines going up and down on the screen !!! , And once i connect any other items it just keeps repeating . One other thing that i noticed to day is that when i play a video on the screen , after 10 min the car turn off by it self ( My car is Mazda6) could it be because of the m2-atx ???

I have 3 alternatives and i want to take the cheapest one but also a good one , My options :

1-M4-ATX ( If it gonna work fine it will be the best option because it is cheap )

    2-DSATX 220 Watt

    3-opus 320w ( i hope that i don't take this option )

What do you think is the best one for me and what could cause the turn off problem .

    Thanks in advance .

If you have more running off your car it may be an alternator problem. or maybe a grounding problem. Do you have amplifiers/ other power draws? disable them and see what happens. Is your computer directly connected to the battery? does the computer turn off before the car does?

I don't have an amplifiers or any thing else connected . I remembered that when this problem happened the air conditioner was ON . About the ground I'm connecting my M2 direct to the (-) bar of the battery <<< should i change it ?? .

What about the dark lines that appear on the screen ????

Thank you for your respond .

Where is the positive wire for the M2 coming from?

Both the positive and the negative coming directly from the battery .

Your car's engine is on when the whole thing shuts off? I'd say you either have an alternator problem, or a short circuit. Where is the screen getting its power?

The screen gets its power from the cigarettes charger .

I'm going to do some tests tonight trying to find what cause that problem but what do you think is the best thing that i have to do to avoid the black lines from the screen .

The black lines are definitely interesting me. If you run an AC extension cord to the car and run the screen off of that, do the lines persist?

                  Hi ,

I tried , just before 5 min, powering the carpc from my desktop's PSU 400W ATX and it worked fine with out any black lines on the screen . I even let the car working for 15 min and it didn't turn off .I think what is making all the problems is M2 but i don't know if there is a solution to make it works fine or do i have to replace it with one of the three that i have mentioned . And if i have to replace it what would be the best option for me ...!? .

If I were you I would still want to check the VGA cable between the computer and the screen. It might be possible that its insulation has come off and it is touching the frame of the car.

You may also want to try running new cables from the battery and making sure they don't come in contact with each other.

I went ot the shop and i bought 4 kinds of wire and test them all and .......... every think still the same >>> the dark lines still there .

I noticed another thing , Once the processor works more the dark lines become more and darker on the screen . And if the screen work only for 1% to 5% the screen become clean .

So i think that there is no enough power..?! . What do you think ?? .

I agree, there definitely isn't enough power, but the question is what isn't getting the power it needs and what might be sucking it away.

What processor are you using? I just read that it can only use processors which use less than 65 watts which would explain why the CPU usage affected things.

Then again you said that your system was fine when powered by an ATX PSU.

I just had a look at the M2-ATX specs and I see that the 12 volt rail is capable of supplying 8 amps. I should have looked there sooner.

A hard drive pulls around 1.5 amps so now we are down to 6.5 amps remaining.

A 65 watt processor pulls 5.4 amps so now we are down to 1.1 amps.

That system has a relatively powerful graphics card which I'm willing to say eats the remainder of those amps.

You need to either cut down on power or use a bigger power supply. You can try underclocking your CPU a bit and I bet that would fix things. That is kind of just a band-aid though.

M4-ATX will definitely give you enough power. It supplies up around 15 amps on the 12 volt rail. I'm using one right now on my test bench and it is supplying power very nicely to pretty much the same system as you with the addition of a whole bunch of powerful lights.

I'm using AMD 4850e which is supposed to be 45W . I tried many time to underclock the processor but i had some problems with booting when i did that . So i think the best option is to go with M4 .

Thank you very much for your responses .

i just noticed this thread... im using the M2 ATX power supply and it runs my pc (see Seville thread in my sig) and it ALSO can run a 15" lcd monitor, microsoft streets n trips gps and a plethora of other devices without problem, tho my processor is the amd 3500 or 3800 i forget offhand but the fact that i can run a fully equiped pc AND the 15" monitor off the M2 ATX, suggests to me that there is something else going on with your setup since you are running the monitors power from an external source (cig lighter)

i tossed that cig lighter power adapter and spliced in a connector (4 pin molex) so that i could use the M2 ATX to power it (lilput 7" widescreen touchscreen) and it runs without problem whatso ever

when u say when the processor is working the dark lines get darker, this is also sometimes the case when you overclock graphics and the cards memory or chip gets a lil too warm--- what kind of heatsinks do you have on the chipsets? and what kind of cooling do you have for the cpu??
