A second battery with an isolator?

For starters, a dash mounted voltage gauge will tell you when to start the car.

Secondly, buy a deep cycle, YellowTop Optima car battery to replace the one you currently have.

No pun intended, others will tell you to buy an isolator and a second battery. However, if your alternator is not upgraded too, then it's a lost cause to add a second battery.

One deep cycle high quality gel cell battery is all you need. Pay attention to the AmpHour Rating (reserve capacity) when you shop, the higher the better. This is critical in determining the length of time you can power accessories with the vehicle off.

          Here: http://www.1st-optima-batteries.com/

I am using the D31A. It comes with an installation kit that includes various mounting shims, and a base plate, that allows a slightly larger battery to securely fit in a standard automotive battery tray.

would a capacitor do the job???

No. The difference between a capacitor and a battery is that a capacitor dumps its entire charge in a tiny fraction of a second, whereas a battery would take minutes or hours to completely discharge. Capacitors are good where high pulse currents are needed for a very short period of time.

Example: An electronic flash on a camera uses a capacitor -- the battery charges up the flash's capacitor over several seconds, and then the capacitor dumps the full charge into the flash tube almost instantly.

The same theory applies in a high powered automotive sound system. The capacitor acts like a momentary buffer to saturate the amplifiers circuitry, enabling it to produce cycles of deep bass.

Nevertheless, adding a second battery with an isolator is up to you, and is subjective in nature. Everything has a cause and effect. Factors to take into consideration are -- more weight obviously will affect your fuel economy. The extra battery will place an excessive strain on an alternator that is not designed to address two batteries. You will notice the alternator belt wearing our faster than it should, resulting in premature failure. If it's a V-Belt, it may need constant readjustment or frequent replacement.

With a deep cell Optima battery, battery voltage is more uniform across the discharge curve. This is the secret that enables you to run your electronics up to four times longer than a typical lead acid battery, thereby eliminating the need for s second lead acid battery.

I've conducted tests using a Schummacher Elite digital battery/alternator control center, proving that statement to be true. Optima SpiralCell technology is also more tolerant to deeper discharge cycles, and recharges faster than conventional batteries do. Doing so, prolongs the life-cycle of the aforementioned automotive components. This battery is said to deliver, 1.5 to 2x, the service life of an ordinary lead acid battery.

I easily get four or more hours using my dual core PC and a 17" LCD monitor every day, even after just three miles of city driving, going to and from work.

                  For
$229.95, and a digital voltmeter gauge, you spend more time enjoying your carPC than worrying about battery drain.
