  • M2-ATX Powering Issues

    I am trying to set-up my work bench at home and found an old Mini ATX power supply. I fooled it to power on and it does, even checked with a multimeter. My situation: I purchased a Mini ITX Carputer from ebay which already came prewired with an M2-ATX. I connected the power and switch wires together because I didn't have a switch at the time, hooked up the ground and what I notice is that the tiny green LED on the motherboard lights up for a second and then goes off. I thought the power supply wasn't powerful enough so I brought it to the car - hooked up black to ground and as soon as I connected the red wire (without white this time) to positive terminal, it "welded" itself to the terminal and the fuse on the M2-ATX blew. What am I doing wrong? I promise I searched

    Did you have a fuse on the power wire coming from the battery? It sounds to me like you did not place a fuse within 18 in of the battery which then caused the wire to melt from the short.

      hey skeet2331, thanks for the reply, but I do not see the need for a fuse for a short term use. Correct me if I'm wrong

        You should always fuse a power wire. You created a short somewhere that is why the fuse blew on the M2. Since that fuse blew then there was enough current to melt the power wire to the battery terminal. It is always better to be safe then sorry.

          make sure you are connecting the cables to the right terminals, the instructions are somewhat misleading, follow the bottom pic not the top one

            You're right the top diagram is incorrect! I noticed it right away after looking at the M2.
            Question about the switch wire - can't I just connected it directly to the power wire bypassing the switch? Also why did the LED light go on and then right away turned off after the mini ATX was connected?

              In my bench setup, the same thing was happening. green light on, then the power supply would shut off. i checked the voltage and was only getting about 9.5V on my 12V rail. odd right? Then I read somewhere that older ATX psus sometimes require a load to be on the 5V rail. So I just connected an old dvd to one of the power cables (but no ide) cable, and it booted right up.

              if the m2-atx isnt getting at least 11.2V it'll shut off.

                That is very odd! My problem however is that the power supply stays on, but the LED shuts off. I will try hooking up a dvd player, or similar, see if that works.

                  When it was on a bench test did you try it without the M2ATX? Did you put it on a normal PSU?

                      Without the M2, everything works flawlessly. When trying to power with the M2, the green led on the MB goes on for a second and shuts off right away. Safe to assume that the M2 is toast?

                        after reading the installation manual again, I realized that the jumpers are set to P4 - 30seconds + 1min AutoLatch - does the led lighting up and turning off right away represent the ON pulse and then it waits 30 seconds before it provides power to motherboard?

                          try setting it to p0 mode. standard atx mode. just take off the jumper. and it should turn right on when you flip the switch. i use P1 and it works.

                          if not, i'd still check the voltage on your 12v rail. if its under 11.2V, the system won't turn on.

                          also, i read somewhere that you need may need to short another two wires on the atx connector on your PSU. pins 8&9. they are the "stay on" wires on some power supplys.

                            roflcopter - thanks for the advise. I actually tried that before and still wasn't powering on. After playing around a little more and leaving the P1 setting, the computer powered on and now everything works perfectly.
