  • What timings do you use/wish there were for M2-atx?

    Well, my first idea for this thread was to do a poll, but I'm not sure that is flexible enough for the information that I want, so I will just have to tally up answers in the end...

    As some of you know, I have been trying to put the finishing touches on some custom firmware for the M2-atx power supply. You can follow the progress here:

    In hopes of making the firmware absolutely as awesome as it can be, I would like to determine the most frequent timing modes that people want, because my code is flexible enough to easily make it do whatever we want as far as timing is concerned.

    I have included all of the original timing modes that the original M2 code has, in chronological order from powering on the pc:
    • ampdelay: time from powering on pc to turning on amp through J6 to prevent thumping
    • autolatch: time from powering on pc to when M2 will detect ignition low for shutdown, used to allow pc to completely boot properly in case car is turned on and off in short amount of time
    • offdelay: time between ignition going low (after autolatch) and M2 sending button press to mobo to signal shutdown, used to potentially allow car to be off for short times without shutting down the pc
    • hard-off: time between turning off main power rails and turning off 5V standby rail to conserve power.
    I also added one more delay in the code that does exist in the original in a slightly different way... I don't think it needs to be user-configurable with the jumpers but I am interested in input as to how long it should be:
    • shutdown: this delay is counted between the time the button is pressed to shut down the pc and the time that power is removed from the main power rails if the motherboard does not indicate that it shutdown properly...it is used to keep the pc from draining the battery if it hangs during shutdown
    So let me know what timings would work best for you! I will compile the responses into the options that require the fewest jumpers in the code!

      Here are my preferences:

      ampdelay: 10 seconds... I plan to have a fast booting linux build

      autolatch: 60 seconds... shouldnt be long enough to have much effect on the battery but system should never take longer to boot than that for ANY reason

      offdelay: 5 seconds... I don't plan on ever keeping the computer on when the car is off but that should be long enough to turn the key back on if I change my mind and dont want the computer to turn off

      hard-off: 1 minute... I don't need the 5V standby because I don't plan on using sleep mode

      shutdown: 60 seconds... I figure that if it hasn't shut down in 60 seconds, something is terribly wrong

      On that note, can someone confirm for me whether hibernate mode requires 5V standby power? I can imagine that people who use hibernate or sleep mode for resuming quickly may need a hard-off NEVER option, which shouldn't be a problem to put in... I just need to decide which jumper settings would disable the hard-off timer.

      It looks like standby and sleep require 5V standby and hibernate does not... So the hard-off delay needs to be set for NEVER if you want to use standby or sleep. Does anyone use standby or sleep mode with their carpc???

        The only alteration I want is instant on instead of the 5 second delay - and also instant hibernation or, 1-2 second.

          I have already removed the 5 second delay as described in the other thread...

          So you want a 1-2 second offdelay? Does hard-off matter to you?

            I believe that means after a certain many of hours it takes the machine out of hibernate and fully shuts it down correct? at least that's what I always thought it did. I'm not sure what mine is set to currently, but I have no issues with the current m2-s setup for this feature.

            I request a 1-2 second off delay because I don't know how system fully works during an engine crank, if the m2 can survive the crank, i wouldn't need a 1-2 second delay- i only thought that it might die if the power is cut for that split second.

              Big batteries?

              I would like my computer to wake on a door ajar signal. I'd like a 5 minute window between door closed and ignition on to hold power. Is that autolatch? I'd also like it to hold standby for 3 hours after ignition off before shutdown. Sorry, pretty fuzzy yet on the details.

                If I'm not mistaken if your computer is in full hibernate mode it should not use any power since all the ram is save to your hard disk and booted from there.

                  Coming out of hibernate, the computer has to boot up. Whatever you had in RAM is reloaded from the hard drive. You save a couple seconds of re-opening files and loading hardware only. I want standby where the computer is already booted with my MDX and RR ready and waiting.

                    You are correct. Hibernate mode uses no power as the RAM does not need to be powered on as the state is saved to non-volatile memory (the hard disk).

                      Thank you all for the clarification. It seems that the 5V standby is not needed for hibernate, but is needed for standby and sleep.

                        sorry if this is off-topic, but I am assembling my carputer and have no real world experience, so the answer to my following question will effect how I answer the topic question.

                        Can someone point me to, or explain how exactly the off dealy and hard off work. For example, if i have a off-delay of 30 minutes I can stop, get gas and not have my carputer power off correct?

                        If i have an off delay of 10 seconds, and hard off of 30 minutes and I get out pump gas and then turn the car back on am I booting from hibernate because I've surpassed off-delay? What exactly is the 5v doing and why would I want to keep it on when turning off my car?

                        What happens when I turn the car on and have surpassed both off-delay and hard off?

                        Finally if I have turned off the car and have a 30 minute off delay setting, and my computer is still running; I'm assuming my music is also still playing? So i get back in the car and I'm now on track 12 when I stopped my car to pump gas on track 10?

                        Again not trying to thread jack, you can pm the answer if you'd like and delete my post.

                          The off-delay is a timer that counts from when the psu detects that you turned the ignition off to when it sends a simulated button press to the motherboard to turn the pc off. So, if you have an off-delay of 30 minutes, you can turn your car off and the psu will not tell the computer to turn off until 30 minutes later. By your example, you will now be on track 12 because the computer has no idea it is in a car. It just continues to do whatever you told it to do.

                          The hard-off delay is a timer between when the psu removes power from the main power rails (5V, 12V 3.3V) after the pc shuts down and when the psu removes power from the 5V standby rail. Normally, ATX power supplies always supply 5V standby power to the motherboard when they are plugged in (and the rocker switch on the psu is on). Because this application gets its power from a car battery, most car psu's have the ability to turn off the 5V standby rail to minimize power consumption.

                          As far as I know, the only reason you would need the 5V standby to remain on is if you want to use standby or sleep modes, which require the 5V standby power to power the RAM. Otherwise, I am not sure why you would want the 5V standby power to remain on for long periods of time. Perhaps someone who has a use can chime in???

                          If you have surpassed the hard-off timer and you turn your car on, the psu first turns on the 5V standby rail, then sends a simulated button press to the motherboard and then powers up as normal... either from hibernate if you use that or from cold boot if you dont.

                            cool man. good info and you've clarified it for me. I know there is a sleep mode option in windows, but I wonder how you would set it up to sleep and hibernate...

                              Glad I could help. I can't tell you how to set up sleep or hibernate in windows, but I can tell you that what you want to configure is the behavior of the operating system on a power button press. For example, you can tell it "when you see a power button press, go into sleep mode" or "when you see a power button press, go into hibernate." The power supply does not know what the computer will do when it presses the power button so the jumpers must be set for the appropriate situation that is configured in the OS.

                              But back on topic a bit... What power mode are you interested in using and what timings do you imagine would be best? Sleep/standby with hard-off NEVER? Or hibernate with hard-off 1min? How about offdelay timing?
