  • How long...

    I know this is a bit of a vaigue question, I was wondering how long people think it is safe to have an in-car pc on after turning the car off without the battery going dead. System is an VIA M10000, Opus PSU, 3.5" hdd.
    Mainly asking coz I wanna be able to go inside and remote access the system without having the car runing (for at least 30mins) without anything bad happening next time I try and start my car.

    That wil go just fint, The opus has a built in battery protection. but restarts a moment after 8-(. I have my system to test, and it run over 60 min on a 24 Ah battery, and the one in your car is dubbel that.

      you'll be fine. I've run my system for 90 minutes with no problems. I use a 300 watt inverter and a 800 mgz amd

          I've had my comp on that's powered by an opus (and is powering my monitor) and my radio on for about 3 hours and it started....but it was a little questionable.

              battery protection is questionable...

              I've run the opus and car audio system for a pretty long time without the car on but key in the ignition. Car was in the garage for 3days straight. I had winamp playing while detailing and working on the install. Not sure of the exact opus on time, but probably much more than 6 hours with an amp running.

              When battery was on its last limbs, xenarc started flickering. Shortly after, the opus triggered a windows shutdown. If you have a program that wont close when shutting down windows, don't count on the battery protection saving you.

              Because the key was still in the igntion, the opus fired back up. I didn't wish to take any chances of a dead battery, so I tried to crank it. First attempt failed. Second was no better. I thought I was sol.

              I finished up whatever I was working on and grabbed a cool drink. I turned off all the gizmos and unhooked the opus and gave it one more chance. It finally started. Under winter conditions or older engine/starter, I'm not sure the battery cutoff would be good enough.

                Clearly the opus cutoff isn't enough. I have seen aftermarket devices before that attach right to your battery though and will cut all power to the car if the power gets low. That would probably be the best way of assuring that everything will be ok. I've been thinking of keeping a spare battery in the trunk for the day I do something stupid like leave the key in and tank my battery, that way I can just toss the old one and throw in the new one. (my current one is a few years old and I've run it dead once).

                  Why not go one step further and wire it up throw a switch in and use it to jump your original if it goes bad

                    I have two batteries, one that runs my starter and all the car's electronics, and then I have a second battery that runs my carputer and all my amplifiers etc.. that way I can listen to my carputer until it's battery is completely dead, and then just start the car again, and it will kick back on.

                    In order to do this, you need a multi battery isolator, which you can find for cheap on eBay, I bought mine for like $10.

                    It also works as a tank circuit! so that when you are cranking the car, the carputer stays on!
