  • 120V to 12V adaptor how many amps needed?

    ok so I got the PW-120 PSU from ebay and it's claimed to generate 120Watts of power. So if I want to use this in the home 120V plug, I'd need a 120-12V adapter. The question is how many amps do I need. I can find to a max of 1500 mAmps on radioshack. Is this enough or do I need something like 5 amps? Thanks.

    P(120w)=E(12v)*I

    or

    I=P(120w)/E(12v)

    or

    I=10A (at max draw)

    A=mA/1000

    so 1500mA=1.5A

    So in summary you need a 12vdc power supply that can put out a minimum of 10A to produce the full 120w.

    And that is the million dollar question...well at least a $90 one right now.

      holly crap. So I'm still faaarrrr off eh? You know any place that sells a 120-12V adapter than can put out 10A? Or am I just better off by buying a 150W ATX PSU for home usage?

        A 6A one came with my PW-70 and that seems fine.

        They are available, just not cheap...I guess it depends on the asspain factor. If you have a self contained box, and just want to plug either the wall wort, or the car plug, then find the 10A one, other wise do it the other way.

        Most laptop adapters are about 90W these days, just search google, there are large power supplies out there...the ham radio folks use them all the time.

          buy am old atx psu off ebay, dirt cheap compared to a huge ac-dc psu (120v - 12v like you said) Unless you have your motherboard in a case where changing psu would be a pain everytime
