  • PW70a directly to car battery

Has anybody successfully connected up the PW70a directly to the car battery and the EPIA board and is still using it

  • #2
The PW-70a doesn't regulate the 12v rail, so that's not a good idea.

i haven't done it ... but according to Minibox this is ok if you don't have any 12v components (i.e. desktop hard drives or cdrom) as the pw-70a just passes that rail straight through without conditioning it...

      i wouldn't trust it though.

I ran a PW-60 directly off the battery for several months and never had any problems. Like others have said, however, the 12v rail is unregulated, so when the car is running, 12v devices (like hard drives) are actually running at 14v. My hard drive never seemed to mind, but recently I added a 12v regulator circuit before the PSU, just to be on the safe side.

I've got a HD laying around that has "an imminent failure" message when i POST, so i'll plug that in and use it until it finally bites the dust, or something explodes...hmm. Other than that, i have no 12v componants. I'll test it out when i get things installed, seeing as it'll die anyway, and it's old.

wonder what would happen if the alternator regulator circuit went oops a little bit fautly, i've known it to happen when a few bulbs have popped along with a few other things. i would strongly reccomend that you do use some sort of protection just in case..

so, if I have EPIA and laptop HDD (those do not use 12v, as I know) and some use devices, connecting PW70a directly to car battery is OK? will it survive a crank then?

from what mini-box says it will be ok. probably still won't survive the crank tho

i think the PW-series supplies shot off if they don't get enough voltage.
