  • 12v to 5v step down

    Hi All,
This is discussed several times throughout this forum but I can't hunt down a recommended seller / provider for this.

Does someone have a link to a 12 to 5v regulator available for purchase?

    TIA,

    How about DIY?
You can use either 78L05 (100mAmp), or 7805 (1Amp), or LT1804CT-5/LM1084IT-5 (5Amp). With any of those chip and couple caps, you can make your own 5V regulator for less than 5 bucks.

Search for the datasheet on how to make one.

oh yeah, if you are not DIY, Radioshack should have them. If you need one that doesn't require much juice, get one of those voltage selectable power adapter used for portable CD player that most place sell.

Use this as an opportunity to learn something new about electronics - make your own as MatrixPC suggested.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm looking to power:

        1. a 7 port usb hub, and
        2. a DVD player.

Does that narrow down which components I should use, re: the list above? I'll need two of these?

        Thanks again.

The LM1084IT-5 or LT1084CT-5 is big enough to power both of those. That chip provide up to 5 Amp. Check the label of both the usb hub and dvd player for total power consume. If it more than 5 amp, you have to make 2 of those running one for each.

I'm planning on using LT1084CT-5 because it's a fixed voltage and has enough head room for two 4-port usb hubs. Thing is, someone mentioned that you have to have other components, is that true? or can I just connect three wires to it and call it a day?
