  • New system design...power issues...

My carputer is a Shuttle with P4 2.8ghz, 512mb ram, onboard ATI Raddon 9100, SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZX, floppy drive, and 80gb 2.5" HDD.
The PSU to the carputer will be a 150watt OPUS hardwired to the vehicle's battery.

Other components include 2 USB hubs with their own power supply and with USB touch screen, USB wireless keyboard and mouse, and a USB external DVD drive connected to them. The screen will be a xenarc 10.4" lcd.

I already have an inverter in my vehicle to supply power to a VCR and PS2. So could I just get power from the inverter for the 2 USB hub ? For the components that attaches to the USB hub, do they get power from the USB hub ?

Also for the xenarc 10.4" lcd, it requires a 12v power. Could I just hardwire it to a 12v switch from my vehicle ?

Bascically if my system is wired this way, will there be any problem ?

    Thanks,
    Clement

It's a Honda Odyssey. It has full molded bodykit from Japan , air bag suspension, and 20" wheels.

I just realized that I can use the 5v out from OPUS to power my USB hub, and other components that plugs into the USB hub will get power from the hub. Correct ?

Yes, that's correct. The only thing you need to worry about is the capacity of the opus... But I think it will be sufficient (the powered hubs only draw as much current as the devices connected to them).

For the screen, I would recommend some kind of regulator, as the car delivers typically something between 11,9 and 16v (not even talking about cranking)...

So bascailly everything is powered by a 150watt OPUS. 12v to the Shuttle PC and 5V to hub and components. Then a 12v regulator for the screens.

I really have no idea if I will over load the OPUS. Some say it will work and some say it won't. If in case the OPUS is not enough, what are my options ? Another OPUS ?

After reading the forum, it seems like the ITPS does not work well as a regulator. Another choice would be the Carnetix CNX-P1260. Any other better alternatives or will the carnetix be fine ?
