  • Universal Microelectronics DC-DC convertor

Anyone use their DC-DC convertor before?

    http://www.umec-web.com
    pick up a piece of UM2701. rated in 9v-18v, out 5V 3A.

tested it out just now, pretty good. fed it 13.8v and spit out 5v exact.

only thing is the rated efficiency is 78%

Am thinking of using it to power some 5V devices in the trunk, any issues?

wonder how cheap it is, or if they give samples?

      just found out
the UM2801/UM2802 cost about 40 USD per piece. problem is minimal order is 6 piece. ouch.

would love to use it to power my devices directly

          *grin*
          it's as simple as
connect 1)ACC 2)batter 3) ground to one end
and connect the other end to your device

of coz you should only use this for peripheries. coz the moment you turn off your ignition, the power shuts off.

the other option is to pull a line from your PSU to act as power on/off

come to think about it, that's a much better idea.

If someone could confirm that this will work well. Then 6 shouldn't be difficult to sell within the community. $40 USD is damn cheap.

I have already tested the UM2701 (similar to 2801 but without the on off) and it works great. will try to hunt down the 2801 on market before ordering from the distributor. they just requote me for 3 piece per order which works out to be 50+ per piece.... really need to think about this.

but it's a lovely package to use. will post further when i find it.

                  50mmx50mm for the 2800 series
                  50mmx25mm for the 2700 series

can someone check with the US distributors to check the unit price?

                    just to follow up

instead of waiting for the UM2800 series to come in, i decided to build a relay circuit for the UM2700 bits that i have.

managed to find a small relay and hook up the coil to 12v from the motherboard and the in from car battery. hook the out to the UM2700.
                    voila, i get a poor man's version of 2800

(just for price comparison, i got the UM2701 for 15 SGD (about 9 USD) while the UM2801, with similar spec except on/off circuit, it's 40USD at least)

hence, i will probably not bother with the UM2800 anymore
