  • Will Opus 90W work with this setup?

    I'm running an Asus A7N8X with an AMD Athlon 2500, 2x 512MB PC2700, GeForce 4MX and a single 80GB HDD.

My question is: is anyone else running a comparable setup with the Opus 90W PSU (from the mp3car.com store)? Is this too much system for the 90W? Have you had any experiences with the 90W that really turned you off with a particular setup? Is it worth it to wait for the 150W to be available? I want to get the Opus 150W, but I can't find it in stock anywhere and it looks like it'll be at least a month before the 220W is available, and I'd like to at least get the basic system in the car before winter. I can add to it later, when the 220W is out and available.

    Thanks.

Yup, the second place I went (after checking the mp3car store). It seems they have the 90W version in stock, but I'd hate to buy it to find out it won't sufficiently power my system. And through my ing, it seems that inverters pale in comparison to the Opus's. Plus, I like the integration with the ignition system.

That's too much for the 90 watt. Go with the 150 watt.

Is it in stock? That's his only reason for not getting it.

Do you need the monster power on the vid card?
It's cool but would a lower power and less heat solution work for what you want?

I don't absolutely need the current video card. The board doesn't have onboard video, so I'll need something. I can swap it out with a less demanding card (I think I have a dual-screen GeForce 2 somewhere).

Got an email. They'll be in Oct. 7th. Hopefully mp3car.com store will have them too, they're cheaper here.

Your choice, It was just an idea.... I am using an old PCI card. I am only running WinAmp though so it is more than I need.

The AMD 2500 is going to peek at around 68watts. The MX4 will be about 30 watts. Two sticks of DDR ram will cost you about 20 watts. You're already at 118watts. We haven't even talked about mother board power requirements, hard drives, and any USB devices that you are planning to hook up. I think it's safe to say that the 90watt OPUS is not going to cut it.

If you absolutely can't wait, use a regular power supply and a 120volt power inverter.

As said before, there is no way the 90W will work. Get the 150/220W

Thanks for the advice. I'm definately going to wait for the 150W at least and drop in a lower-end card. The only thing that I foresee putting a heavy load on the GPU would be Winamp visuals.

Do you run the visualizations on it? If so, how fluid is it?

I do not run visualizations, it is an old Matrox PCI card it might have 8mb of memory on it... But it does not use much power and it was on my shelf before the project... so no new cost.

It's not only the max power thats important. So what that your drawing only 80W for instance if it's all on the 5V.

The 90W Opus is designed for Via C3, Pentium-M, AMD Mobile, or Geod processors. Nothing else. Not even a Pentium 2.
