  • Where to get power inverters? Other question...

    Hello all,

I was originally wanting to just get an adapter for the cig lighter, and be done with it(I am after all, only using a laptop and a Xenarc 7 inch VGA)...but reading posts on here, it is becoming more and more obvious that wiring an inverter straight to the battery is the proper way to do it.

My question is, is there a good place to buy these in person? I don't want to get one online because I'd like to get this done today. How much do they usually cost?

My other question is about installation. I'm assuming I simply find a good place inside the car to put this thing, and then simply run its cable through the firewall to the battery terminal. Does anyone have any good basic instructions for doing this? I'm a computer person, not an electrical person, and this is all a little intimidating to me. Any help would really be appreciated.

Not sure where you are located, but you can pick up an inverter at Walmart or most auto part stores. Also you can check best buy, or places like that, they usually have inverters, the right size for powering laptops.
    Install { 50% } Complete for now.
    But stable and running happily

Even though what SVTRanger said is correct, I couldnt personally recommend those stores to you because in my area most of them all carry Vector inverters. And with my past expereinces, they didnt like booting up the PC very well. After 3 Vector inverters I ended up getting a Coleman 400 watt inverter. On the other hand though your laptop should consume a bit less power than a full blown PC and may get away with running a smaller inverter. Just make sure where ever you get it from that they have a good return policy (i.e. walmart) so that if it doesnt work out for you, you can return it or trade it in.

Running a laptop he will never be putting a big load on the inverter, assuming his battey is good, but yeah like he said, such as all thing in life you get what you pay for, happy hunting.
