  • What do the experts think of this new psu

Does anyone have any experience with this make of psu ? http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/407
This one hasnt gone on sale yet but Looks like its the right money for what you get 250W continuously (apparently) .Just doesnt say if its got the start up and shut down options of the opus .Heres what they do say

    Dimensions 150mm[W] 140mm[L] 86mm[H] Standard ATX PS/2 size
    Weight 2.0 kgs
    Input Voltage Range 9 - 18VDC
    Output Power maximum 250W (continuious)
    Remote sensing +5V and +3.3V

Over Power Protection Load over 130%10% of max. output power : shutdown
    Over Voltage Protection +5V, +12V & +3.3V Auto-recovery
Short Circuit Protection Main outputs shutdown and latch off
Over Temperature Protection OTP Level is set at 110C

    Operating Temperature -20C ~ +70C
    Storage Temperature -40C~+80C
Cooling Build-in One 80x80x25mm Ball Bearing Fan with max. air flow 42CFM

The extra power over the opus is the temptation (extra hard drive and two more monitors)and i also run full size drives .I also have a power problem with my touch screen when i plug in my xbox controllers (think the rumble uses to much power) basically doesnt work when there in .So i would also use it to power the hub that the gps, touchscreen, keyboard and xbox controllers are all pluged in to
what do the experts think ?

i've seen this before on other sites, http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/show...hlight=250watt
dont know anyone who actually uses it. Its a bit pricey. And whatever happened to the 300 watt they were supposed to come out with.

Could be a tempting solution for my Insight P4 system that. I paid 100 for a 90W OPUS and this one is only 116 (to UK) for a 250W - hmmm.

Why do you need a shutdown controller. Can the Mobo's power switch not just be connected to a ignition switched live?!?

I bet it doesn't shut its self off though if battery supply voltage drops, ie it will flatten the battery if used with engine off. Mind you my opus 90 used to flatten the car battery before it shut down if I used it too often with engine off.

It looks like the Keypower 250W

And the site says "135.20 with 16%VAT"

This is just like a normal ATX PSU only it is 12V not 230V Nice 3 year warranty though.

The problem is that there is no shutdown/startup controller. You can easily set the Bios to boot upon power restore but you would have to make a way to get the PC to autoshutdown and then kill the power to the PSU ore the 5vsb will rape your battery in a few days and the constant higher than normal standby load (wrt normal car systems) will kill it eventually.

You could rig a basic shutdown controller using a dumy UPS setting and a or alternativel use Girder to do a shurdown/hibernate on a from a button press or form an infra red signal when you lock the car etc etc but if the PC hangs etc then it will stay on. yOu would need some sort of timer system to eventually just kill the PSU. You would also need to set the input on a relay controlled by the normal way you start the PC (eg ACC live or door loacks) and by itself so when the PC shuts down the PSU kills its own power. But you need to isolate the relay feed sor use 2 to stop you connecting car 12V into your PSU output.

Or you can jsut buy a proper shutdown controller which might be a better option!

Not when you remove the 16% vat which UK'ers dont pay its about 116 like I said
