  • Help! Configuring M1-ATX

    I got a M1-ATX PSU temporary hooked up on the 12v line in my trunk. I've put anon/off switch in the + and use the PSU in mode 0 (Dumb mode)

    When both the car and the PC are running, everything is A-OK, when I turn off the car the pc stays on. But when I start the car while the PC is on the PC turns off.

    Won't the M1-ATX compensate/buffer the voltage drop on the car's battery in Mode 0? Or should I use the M1-ATX in another mode then?

    And using those mode's, which is the best setting?

    Mode = off delay / Hard Off
    0 = Traditional PSU (Domme mode)
    1 = 5 sec / 45 sec
    2 = 5 sec / 2 Hours (Recommended)
    3 = 5 sec / Never
    4 = 30 sec / 2 Hours
    5 = 30 sec / Never
    6 = 30 min / Never (Taxi Mode)
    7 = 3 Hours / Never

    If I use mode 2 my pc will shutdown 5 seconds after I get the keys out of the ignition. I don't want that, it's too fast, I don't want the pc to reboot when I'm at a gasstation or getting something quick.
    Best would be a bit of 2 modes, the Off Delay from mode 6 (30mins) and the Hardoff from mode 2 (2 Hours) Is that possible?

    Which mode do you use on your M1?

    I have 5 sec/2 Hour option. I compensated for the 5 sec delay by installing a on-off-on switch which can:

    A- Provide constant power to the ignition wire of M1
    B- Cut power to the ignition wire of M1
    C- Conncet ignition wire of M1 to the car's ignition switch (as designed)

    -When I don't want the PC to turn off at all, switch is on "A". At a gas station I just flip the switch to A.
    -When I don't want the PC to come on, switch is on "B". Comes in handy when the car goes for repair.
    -When I want the PC to start and shut down with the car, switch is on "C". This is what it is normally set at.

      Do you have a howto (howto connect the wires to the on-off-on switch) for me?

        Well in order to make it work, the switch would just change the Ignition lead to the positive wire from the battery, and that will fool the m1 into thinking that the switch is on. To wire such a switch you could use a rotary switch that had three different positions, the output lead goes to the m1's ignition lead, and one of the switch's leads has the battery + wire connected (Option A), one wire has nothing (option B), and one wire has the Ignition wire (Option C).

        You may need to use relays or something to do the actual switching cutting power to the current carrying wires, but the rotary would do all the thinking.

          I have a simple toggle ON-OFF-ON switch connected as in the diagram and it is working fine:

          Edit: Looks like I messed up in naming the poles. Diagram shows location of A, B and C reversed but it does not matter as long as it is connected as shown. In here,

          A - Carputer starts and shuts down as designed whenever car is on or off
          C- Carputer never turns on
          B- Carputer is turned on and stays on even if car is turned off.

              do you have a nice looking switch?? I couldn't anything nice enough that provided the on-off-on option... I was considering just jumping the "b" option on the M1-ATX, so the PS would change from "always on" to the 5sec/45sec option... so my on-off switch would work for me, also a small reset switch for booting, rebooting... does this make sense??

                I just used a mini toggle switch from Radio Shack. I have it mounted on the side so it is not very visible.

                  Nice pick Zeb, the only thing is I wonder is did you just splice into the 3 cables?

                    Correct me if I am wrong but I think there is a spot for a switch on the board it self, like one of the jumpers, that allows it to stay on when you wish.

                        straight from the manual

                        Controls and Settings
                        J2 Controls amplifier via remote ON/OFF. Left pin is RMT, Right pin is GND
                        J6 To motherboard ON/OFF switch
                        J7 User jumper settings (A,B,C,D)
                        J8 To external ON/OFF switch (optional, J8 is in parallel with J6)

                          I just spliced into the 12 volt battery source and the wire to car's ignition switch. The M1-ATX ign wire terminates at the switch.

                          Has anyone tried what agentloveless found? It would be great if it can manually keep the system up but I wonder if it can also keep the system from turning on. That is a feature I sometimes need when I am driving a very short distance such as drive out of the garage to the driveway to wash the car or other simillar situations.

                            When you change from one side to the other, if your middle pole is a dead wire, doesn't it trigger a shutdown on the M1-ATX?

                            So if your system is powered by the ign wire from your car, and before you turned the car off you flick it over to be powered from the 12v +ve, doesn't it switch off?

                            I have tried to use J8 switching it, but i found that you need to turn the switch on and off a number of times to get it to start the system when the Ign is turned off.

                              Silvo - it takes 5 seconds of "off" before the P/S responds... so you can even turn the car completely off and then flip the switch and it will still stay on...

                              J8 should boot the system, but this is just a momentary connection... I don't use this connection currently, but when I need to boot my system, I just short the J8 jumper with a car key... and if I need to reboot the system while the car is running I can short J8 for a few seconds and it will shut down immediately...
