  • Message from Coilcraft about free samples...

Was trying to order samples online as a "student"...and got this message:

    Sorry!
Due to heavy demand from hobbyists and students building MP3 players for their cars,
we are unable to freely provide free samples of these parts.

If you are an OEM engineer working on a commercial product, please click here
and tell us about your application. We apologize for the inconvenience.

If you are a hobbyist, you will have to purchase the parts by calling our sales office:

    US +1-847-639-6400
    UK +44-1236-730595
    The prices are as shown:

    Q4339-B $05.00
    Q4438-B $05.00
    Any PCV part $05.00
Plus shipping and handling (per order) $20.00

    Kinda funny, huh!

they have had that message up for a while. try using the search button here on mp3car, look up sproggy inductors, or sproggy transformer, or t6, or ... there have been many posts very recently discussing this very topic. there are 2 or 3 sites that are distibuting exact or similar replacements for the same parts.

I knew that there were other places mentioned on other threads. I have nothing better to do than search and read current threads all day!! I hadn't heard any mention that Coilcraft's website specifically states that because people are building car mp3players and thought I would point it out because it's kind of funny that mp3car.com caused this.

I think it's quite sad that there are so many people here who don't pay their way. Samples are provided for manufacturers to design products for market (it's an enticement by component manufacturers to use their products). Whereas most people here have no interest in going to market with a product and are abusing the system.

While I do agree with the point your making, most of the companies I have contacted won't sell you just one component. They have minimum orders of 1000 in most cases. I for one cant afford $216.50 for 1000 35v 1800uF caps, when they will quite happily (in most cases) send you 3-4 items as free samples.

I would advise not trying to buy from manufacturers then. Resellers are a better bet for buying small quantities.

Funny thing is thats what I did. The only company I could find in Australia who buys from Coil Craft, still didnt want me to buy one off components. They made me fill out a sample request form and faxed it to Coil Craft!!! Ironic???

it would make the cost alot less and the whole DC-DC building process sooooooo less painful....

What would be nice is a DC-DC with sproggy specs but more off the shelf components...
                        Project - GAME OVER :(

he he, I even personally emailed them, and said it was for a school. They still wound't send them.. So I asked where to get them, and they game me teh name of an austrailian distributor... well, that kinda defeated the whole purpose of requesting *FREE* samples, now didn't it???
