I recon I could knock one up...
It would connect to the keyboard port...
It would "press" alt+ctrl+del then tab, then tab, then enter...

    Shutting the computer down...

          shutdown controller

          You could use this one.
          But..
This isn't really a shutdown controller..
only thing it does it kills the power to the carputer ca. 8mins after the ingnition-key-switch is turned of.
Turn off scandisk on your computer and the computer boots just fine the next time you switch on your car.

Couldn't you hack up a keyboard to make a device that "pressed" the keys ALT + CTRL + DEL (which brings up the "Close Program" Window)... Then TAB twice (which highlites "Shutdown", then ENTER (which shuts it down)???
This idea is only suited to ATX mobos though....

              could it work???

How about you not ask if things can be done if you're going to ignore the answer anyway?

People don't like helping someone when the person is just going to argue over ever little detail with them. If you know better than them, don't bother asking, just do it.

                      "should it work"
                      "can it be done"

this aint a shutdown controller but better than the ctrl+alt......tab..tab..

                            [Computer Shutdown Shortcut]
                            C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

                            [Computer Reset Shortcut]
                            C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindowsexec

then have a shortcut key on your keypad for for your ir-remote or something
