  • Tell me about Voltage Regulators...

    Hi!
Can anyboy tell me what is a voltage regulator? Is it somethign cheap and simple I can use to get 5V out of 12V?
Sproggy PS looks complicated plus there are those inductors that just scare me off.
    Thanks!

Simply put, voltage regulators take an unregulated (usually higher) input voltage and regulated it down to a stable voltage (such as 5V, 12V, etc.). There are no simple linear voltage regulator circuits suitable for powering a computer, which is one of the reasons the Sproggy supply exhists.

you just need 5V output?? I think you can easily find power supplies that put out only 5V. If you need less than 1A to drive LCD's etc... you can just use a simple 7805 voltage regulator with a heatsink.
Not sure if this helped any
