Does your DSATX shut down after 5 blinks?

  • Does your DSATX shut down after 5 blinks?

    5 blinks is an overload and has happened a few times with my current setup. I'm asking quite a bit of the unit. I have an older version and im curious if those with new versions have run into the same thing. When my unit goes into overload, I never know it as the PC is located remotely. This overload causes the DSATX to NOT shut down after 10 mins of no acc and i come out with a dead battery the next morning.

    Can anyone varify that the new version does not bypass the shutdown timer when overload (5 blinks) kicks in?
    Take my advice: Do not try to build a system that includes EVERY feature. Start with the basics, build it to a bug free state, and THEN add on.

    I believe that is correct.
    I was having a similar issue. It would reboot once, usually sortly after I started the truck. I brought the PC inside and set the high voltage threshhold to 18.00v and the low voltage threshhold to 8.5v. Hopefully, that will resolve the issue.

      What you are discribing is called the Fault State. The way to clear a fault state is to have ACC go low and the motherboards PS_ON signal to go high (deasserted). Next time you get into this state if you could measure the green wire with a DMM, that would tell me if your motherboard is still trying to turn on the computer keeping the fault state from being cleared.

      It's possible that when you get into this fault state, the motherboard is still pulling on the PS_ON signal. I could modify the code to just clear the fault with an ACC going low. The input voltage has nothing to do with the fault state. It is strictly based on wether the outputs of the DSATX are within 10% of the nominal voltage.

      What kind of numbers is your diagnostic feed putting out for +5 +3.3 and +12. If they are at one end of this range, I might consider extending the allowable range. There is also 50ms of hysteresis so that it has to stay bad for that long before it will go into a fault.

        Will, I think your PSU might need to be updated with my firmware fix that can't be done remotly..

          Jeff, can i pay you a deposit plus shipping and have you send me out a 2nd unit? It can be a refurbed. I have no issue with that. When i get it I'll pull mine and send it back to you? Then refund the deposit?

          I'd like to get this done but i have a couple road trips coming up that I would hate to be "tuneless"


          In regards to your questions, I will keep an eye out but it can be tough to catch it when it overloads. I have been hibernating manually everytime i shut down the car. I will test next time i catch it.

            Okay, I just installed the 3 pin fan with my DSATX to stop it shutting down in this hotass summer, but now when I try starting the car and carpc w/ ACC I'm getting 5 blinks and whole lot of nothing. What can I do? I still have the same configuration as before, but the the new fan that is only using 1.5 watts. Help please.

              Exactly the same happens on my machine.

              1.The DSATX works fine.
              2. I shutdown the pc/it shuts down the PC
              3. Come back later and restart car (ie: ACC goes high)
              4. It calls a fault state (5blinks)
              5. I pull the Fuse to the DSATX (Because nothing other than removing VCC will relieve the fault.)
              6.Put fuse back in - PC boots as normal

              I'll try monitor that voltage and get back to you.
              But in my case, Id probably prefer (need) to have the Fault State ignore the PS_ON signal.

              I'll also check the MB turn on pins to see if its active high or low.

                I can make an update for you that doesn't look for PS_ON going low to clear the fault.

                  And, in your opinion, easiest way to include a 'HARD OFF' switch = putting a switch inline with VCC (or one that switches a relay that passes VCC)?

                  Reason:
                  Poor soundcard drivers sometimes cause my PC to hang/play trashed sound at FULL VOLUME, so i need something to "immediate off" the system. I looked at the USEROFF header pins, but these ZERO the countdown timer when ACC is low, and the above situation has occured to me whilst doing 110Kph on the highway with no way to turn off ACC in a hurry.

                  The switch will be in the ON state 99% of the time, but I need it just as a failsafe (might even make it a momentary one to act as a reset button instead).

                    The Reset switch sounds like the best solution. You'd need a 20 amp relay or a really beefy switch for a "Hard Off"

                      I thought as much, just wanted to check.
                      i'll use a small switch to trigger a HORN Relay (30A).

                      Please let me know about the firmware upgrade. Hopefully I can reflash it with my brainstem cable.

                        I pulled apart my Car and managed to monitor the PS_ON voltage whilst the DSATX was operating.

                        I measured from PS_ON (Green Wire) wrt GND terminal on the DSATX.

                        PC On/Operating : 0.032V
                        PC Shutting Down/Turn Off Pulse : 5V
                        PC Off: Falls from 5V to 2V (< 1second). Stays at 2V (1.9-2.0).

                          Here is the post I just made on your forum, I didn't know whether you looked there or here more often. Sorry for the crosspost.

                          Have had no previous problems with DSATX, great unit. Recently (last week) the DSATX did not ever shutdown after the ACC line connected to the ign went low, didn't know until the next morning when the car battery was dead. Since then it has twice 'latched up' and not shutdown. This last time (tonight) I saw that the status LED was blinking and I counted a repetition of 5 blinks. I have not made any changes to the wiring/devices/current draw since installing it. I had to remove +12 volts from VIN momentarily to 'reset' the DSATX back to sleep mode (I presume). I noted that in the user manual it said that making ACC low would reset an error (5 blink) condition, but it was low anyway because the ign key was turned off. There was one anomaly, I have always had the DSATX send serial data that is always displayed on my monitor for the various parameters. This cable had come/been disconnected probably from the last time a few days ago when I had to remove the computer to cycle the VIN power. I reconnected the cable BEFORE I cycled the power to see if it was still sending data and it was. The countdown was 0, all the voltages/in and out/temps looked ok , but the shutdown status was '7' which I've never seen. Anything you can think of for me to test/check?

                            What does the back of the unit say?

                            4805 serial numbers have this problem.

                              It was quite a tight fit to get it loose, I did not remove it from the case all the way, I was able to peek underneath and I am quite sure the sticker says:

                              D174805

                              Thanks for your fast reply Jeff, it's great that you may have already diagnosed the problem, weird that I don't ever remember this happenning before and I've had this same setup in the vette for at least 6 months.

                              Is there any user-serviceable workaround/update?
