  • Sproggy Part Question

While checking the component list (.pdf) for the Sproggy 2.6 power supply, I noticed that one of the inductors from Coilcraft was listed as T6 (Q4339-B) but on the other side of the page was listed as Q4338-B, which is the T5 package

The previous 2.5 version had the T6(Q4339-B) listed in both places. Was this just a typo or are the parts interchangeable? Both are available from Coilcraft and they look to be very similar. However, I'm not ignorant enough to believe I could tell the difference (software guy, trying to learn hardware) and I don't want a smokescreen as a new feature for my car. Can anyone help me out?

    Thanks,
    Brian

the q-4339b is the correct part. it isnt an inductor, it is a flyback transformer (alright, almost an inductor). you want the T6. but you are not going to get it from coilcraft. no free samples, part cost is $10 each, and shipping/handling is another $10. they got tired of people raping them of free samples on the transformers and the choke inductors. there are about a dozen posts that will tell you this!! check out renco for the transformer, or talk to mastero, he might be able to sell you one, hopefully cheaper than coilcraft.

definately do a search for sproggy inductors or transformers... much info is awaiting you!!!

I happen to have 6 each of the flyback transformers (Q4338-B and Q4339-B) and 6 each of 2 different inductors from Coilcraft. I just wanted to verify if the parts were interchangeable.

The parts aren't unavailable from them. You just have to ask really nicely and have a good reason (a car mp3 player isn't one, so be creative).

      Thanks,
      Brian

p.s. When my supply is working (hopefully soon) and if I haven't destroyed all of them, I'll happily make the extra available to others for free.

        very smooth!!!!

i knew that you could get them as samples, but i didnt want to put in the effort of trying to convince them. so i went elsewhere.

i just checked the schematics for the t5 and t6...

both *will* work but if you use the t5 you will have to do some special wiring...(read: dont use it if you have the t6) the t5 has 5 outputs, but the 2 outputs with the same winding count are on opposite sides of the transformer... if you used that one you would have to cut the legs on pins 7, 8, 3, and 4. then you would have to jump legs 3 and 4 to the board connections for 7 and 8. too much work if you already have the t6...

        THEY ARE NOT DIRECTLY INTERCHANGABLE

Very sweet. Exactly the kind of answer I was hoping for.

          Thanks,

if you dont want some of those transformers (or all the extras) i wouldnt mind taking them off your hands for a couple of other projects i might be working on...

i can pay for shipping if you want, let me know when you are done with the sproggy...

Admittedly, I'm still in the circuit design learning phase, so it will probably be a while before I'm done. I'd be more than happy to give some to you then, though.

I'm not so worried about jumping the pins on the Q4338-B since I'm making a new PCB design from scratch to get the shutdown controller on the same board. In fact, using a different transformer would probably make it easier for other people to get ahold of components before they clamp down on the free samples again.

HA!!! I tried asking them nicely before, in an email, not using their order form. I told them it was for a school project, (which is mostly true) but they still refused.. Had a whole conversation with them asking where I could get teh parts from and all that, but they still wouldn't give in.. :P ohh well

It probably didn't hurt that I had them sent to an office with my title ("Engineer") and department ("Tech-R&D") listed and gave a fairly elaborate description of the system I was working on. Technically, I never lied about it, but for example, "mobile computing workstation integrating GPS technology, infrared communication, and real-time audio" sounds a lot better than "I want to play mp3 files in my car."

Lastly, and this works for just about any free samples, it helps to be really, really polite but sound like you're on a tight deadline. My favorite is "I just got screwed by one of your competitors, Acme, and I really need a couple sample widgets by Monday. Is there any way you can help me out?"

That's probably because they are sick and tired of giving free parts to freeloaders.

I prefer to think of it as being resourceful.

Besides, does "freeloader" apply due to the sample parts or the mp3 collection?

Hm, perhaps it applies to both? But then, that makes me a freeloader as well.
