  • anyone use a normal atx powersupply on their car?

    Does anyone use a normal atx psu in their car hooked via an inverter. I'm planning on installing a carputer in my car and I'm looking for the cheapest solution possible. I have plenty of atx power supplies, has anyone made like a custom switch or something that tells the computer to hibernate or shutdown when the car turns off?

      Depend on your hardware, M2-ATX PSU is a better solution (and probably cheaper) than inverter. M2-ATX has built-in shutdown controller to automate startup and shutdown. If you go with inverter, you have to buy a stand alone SDC to automate startup/shutdown. Most of the SDC cost almost half what M2 cost.
      BTW, try to search for inverter to see why it is NOT a prefer method to power the PC in the car.

        Sell all the ATX power supplies and get an opus or M2-ATX.

          And if your hardware needs more juice than what the M2-ATX can supply, there is always the DSATX. Or M2-ATX + auxiliary Opus POL(s).

          With an inverter you need to add in the cost of a SDC. And AC-DC supplies are inefficient compared to DC-DC.

          There are legitimate reasons to use an inverter in a carPC solution, however I do not really think cost is one of them - unless you planning to reuse an existing inverter setup.

            Ok, well my system is going to be:
            Soyo k7vme Mobo
            Athlon Xp-m 1400+
            1 Gb Ram or 512Mb depending on usage
            1gb CF Card
            Possibly 60 gb 2.5in hard drive? (External perhaps)
            Slim Load Dvd Player

            I used other calculators and it said 200 watts total at peak. I find that pretty high, a normal k7 cpu, mobo should take about 110 watts. And I ahve a mobile cpu, so that should lower it more to about 100. In other words, the maximum wattage shouldn't go over 150 watts.

              My home desktop computer is an athlon 64 3200+ with a power-hungry 3.5" SATA hard drive (that almost gets hot enough to burn you), high-end video card (which also sucks a lot of power, and gets really hot), and a few PCI cards like TV tuner, sound card, etc... and my system only has a 250 watt power supply in it.
              My carPC is a similar system (M7NCG mobo, athlon XP-M 2200+, 512mb ram, laptop HD) to what you're proposing and I've never noticed it getting more than slightly warmer than ambient during operation. I've never measured its power consumption, but using heat generated as an indicator, I know it uses SIGNIFICANTLY less. If your proposed system uses even half as much power as my desktop I'd be quite surprised... so I would be willing to guess that an M2-ATX or opus 150w could handle it.

              by the way, do you have the mobo/processor yet? have you tried them? I am interested in seeing how people like other micro-ATX boards with the mobile processors (particularly, how much of a headache it is to get the mobile processors running on boards with chipsets such as VIA, which don't have software multiplier and FSB control in the BIOS) because I'm a bit sick of having a mobo that doesn't support suspend-to-RAM (S3 standby)

                One more problem, my mobo requires a 12v line as well as the atx line. I could just use one of the molex connectors and wire one up but has anyone done that? It should be fine but just wanted you all input.

                  oh this mobo surprisingly accepts mobile processors. I was quite surprised. I've been using this sytem for my linux server 24/7 in my stuffed up closet. It runs like a charm no problems. The mobo even identifies the right cpu on post (Athlon XP-M 1400+). I've tried it on my other msi mobo but I like this soyo mobo better, mini atx and very rock solid realibility.

                  Maybe I just got lucky lol, this via chipset never gave me any problems on the cpu
                  Btw, I can adjust the fsb and multiplier on the bios.
