  • Jetway J9F2-KHDE... What a P.O.S.

    Alrighty, I ordered a Jetway J9F2-KHDE and a T5500 processor (Socket M) with 1Gb of DDR2.

Well, put it together and nothing. No beeps, no post, no turning on the video card. Nothing.

So I thought defective CPU or mobo, but no way to test. So I ordered another CPU and made sure it was Socket M by ordering a Core Duo rather than a Core 2 Duo. I ordered a new T2050. Put it in, nothing. Same deal, no post, no beeps, no nothing.

So I thought defective mobo. I asked for a replacement and when it arrived, put it together, using the T5500 and nothing again. So then I put in the T2050 and nothing again.

I called Jetway and was told I need to use low density RAM 64x8 which is not in the documentation anywhere. But the stick of Kingston memory was low density and 64x8. But I figured it was the only other thing that could be wrong. So I went to Circuit City, paid $80 for a stick of 512, plugged it in, nothing. Went back to Circuit City, returned it. Ordered a 1Gb stick from their online store for $30 (pretty messed up), picked up in the store a half hour later and tried it, nothing. So I ordered 2 1Gb sticks of 533 instead of 677 this time when they came put them in nothing.

Still no beeps, no post, no even turning the monitor out of power save mode. So I searched and searched, found a thread on here and someone used Geil memory, posted a model number of the RAM even, so I ordered the exact same RAM. They came today, I put them in, nothing again.

I then tried the old T2050 in it, and nothing. Tried the old board with both processors again and the new RAM and nothing.

It seems as if this is the pickiest absolute most horrible board I have ever had the displeasure of buying. The "supported RAM" list is very short, and even then it seems to be a crap shoot.

Even if it isn't the RAM, 2 D.O.A. boards in a row is a pretty unacceptable failure rate. Both CPUs are fully supported and even the not-so-helpful Jetway phone-tech confirmed that the processor model numbers (SL9USH and SL9BN) are fully compatible.

So the only option is the motherboard. I have tried the RAM in a different computer and they all work fine. The CPUs were not new, but working OEM pulls. And I am fairly certain it wasn't a P.E.B.C.A.K. error either.

So long and short of it:
    x2 Motherboards
    x7 Sticks of RAM
    x2 CPU's
    x2 Power Supplies
    x4 FedEx Overnight shipping

and that equals no working Core 2 Duo CarPC and a hefty bank breaker.

God I might just go back to a HU...

    j/k

Even after all this, I dont think I can ever take a HU again. But it does suck to be CarPC-less, and have to continually transfer my laptop to the car. Considering I am in my car about 6.5 hours a day this means laptop with the screen off, so I am limited to random shuffling of my music and basic volume control only... No GPS, No Sirius, no USB peripherals.

    Man, that sucks.

I am currently having the same problem with a VIA VB7001. The thing thats weird is that it has been working for a few months and it just suddenly stopped working the other day. I press power button, fan comes on. But no beeps, no POST, no VGA output, nothing.

I swapped everything I could swap and nothing. I got an RMA from VIA and sent the dang thing back to them yesterday.

Hopefully they fix it/swap it and get it back to me soon. Having no tunes blows. I only spend about 2 hours a day (a lot less than your 6.5) but it still sucks,

Well I deliver food at nighttime as well as a long commute to and from university, so the hours add up for sure!

I just ordered a MSI Fuzzy board that is basically the same board as the J9F2 with the same chipset, almost same layout, like a clone, so we'll see if it works. I hope it does. Or that would be x3 dead mobos. Maybe I am cursed.

21k, you're a real man for all that. You sure gave it a VERY fair try.

OK, let's all cry together, or if you wish, comiserate.

I bought the a Via MB in Voom case "Beginner's Special", and after a LOT of back and forth on the phone, and three times shipping back and forth...gave up!

        Fortunately, I am obsessive-compulsive....

Went with what I know, maybe considering something more carpc-ish in future...

Check out my specs, but basically, I have a inverter and new Compaq desktop w/ Vista.
Life is pertty good wit dat, but YES, justa wee bit of inverter whine - generally not heard when muzik starts. Don't care a whit about heat or inefficiency.

Drilled holes in pc case to mount nice fold-down handle from Parts Express. Shook said case a bit to be sure no metal flakes sneaked through barrier. OOOOOps!

Re-started pc - you ever hear that horrible metal-on-metal sound of a HD destroying itself? Yep. Am in process of re-ripping about 200 cd's, and re-installing eveything, plus config'g to my likes. Not fun.

Sometimes do you wonder what it is about the weird disasters of getting a carpc up and running?? I dunno........

        Happy CarPC'ing!

Well this is the 3rd iteration of the CarPC. I am an efficiency nut / energy saving environmentalist. I dont hug trees, but I do drive a 32-42 mpg car and have CFL bulbs and such. Small stuff.

So Version #1 was with a M10k while in high school. Worked great. Got to university, needed to have AutoCAD and Photoshop 7 and now CS2 in the car so I can work while waiting for one of the 1500 parking spaces for the 4000 students to open up so I can get to class. So I moved to the P4-M. It is plenty fast, but not efficient enough for me, as I am pushing the M2 to the max, and the Commell board isn't my favourite. That and as with all carPC's, it is never finished, only between upgrades. So my quest for the C2D ITX formfactor CarPC started when I got back from vacation.

I know I can use a desktop, and an inverter. I dont want to as I personally feel that is half-assed. Also, I already own an M2-ATX which works great, and recently a VoomPC2 case I got from the mp3car store (very fast and awesome btw ). So I am using the itx, dc-dc method, just the actual mobo and cpu are holding me up now...

I hope this new board works out for sure.

Watch it end up being a jumper setting or something. That kind of stuff happens to me just when I start to think I am a computer building master...
Jumpers were like #3 on my list. Not sure if it is a pro or a con, but there arent many jumpers on the board that relate to hardware booting, but there are a lot of "extra" headers. For instance, a very annoying flaw of this motherboard is that it has no backpanel PS2 connector. I use a PS2 mouse and a PS2 keyboard in the house as most geeks do because we all know USB support while digging around the BIOS or other low-low-low-level things is spotty at best. So with this board there is a header that is 6 pins by 1 pin, that connects to a PS2 connector through the header port... wtf?! Anyways, in the manual that was clearly written by some chinese guy and an online translator there is no direction to plug it in. I have read other reviews and complaints of this while searching for a possible solution to this mobo crisis. Some people have even blown up their keyboard by reversing the polarity. Luckily I either guessed correctly, or my 1980's IBM full metal 15 pound keyboard with the original big *** PS2 connector (like 1" in diameter) is very resiliant.

Anyways, back to the headers, there are quite a few for LVDS settings, but not much else of use. Well USB of course.

It seems like a great little board, but it suffers greatly from problems obviously. I still cannot say for sure if it is a very bad manufacturing process, very short list of compatible components, or very bad luck getting all x7 sticks of RAM and x2 CPUs dead on arrival.

That makes me sad for you. I've always had awesome luck with JetWay motherboards. I used to carry MachSpeed line of motherboards, which were rebranded jetway. Out of a couple hundred boards over 2 or 3 years, I think I only ended up RMAing 3 or 4.

Hope it's just that particular model, and not a sign that jetway is going the way of crap.

                Watch that Voom pc case. It's p r e t t y tight in there.

When sliding the halves shut, lotsa care must be taken not to pinch cables; pick the shortest ones that'll do the job. Can be headache, esp if one just slides it shut, heedless.

I got my Voom closed ok, unaware that the cabling was bearing against the memory card, slowly but surely warping it... plus SATA connectors kept coming off - hot glue fixed that.

                Best wishes.

                Happy CarPC'ing!

I dont really care about post times, as I just remote start it for cold boot in the morning and then it is in standby the rest of the day.

In my opinion the T7600 is way overpriced for the advantage over a T7200 and the T7200 go for much less. Any c2d is overkill for the car unless you are like me and use high end programs in the car.

Nope not a problem. Note I also said I used 2 power supplies. First power supply is my trusty hacked up ATX supply that is the el-cheapo kind at 600W advertised (probably closer to 300W). When it didnt work, I too thought power, and switched it out with my brand new backup PSU. I bought it for a really extreme PC I was building for a friend (P4 EE, x2 6800 SLI) when that was top of the line. The 6800 just came out then and the 24pin standard was new then too. Boy I feel old... Anyways, tried that, and nothing either. Both are known good to work, and power up any other board perfectly.

Also I should clarify in the posts above when I say "nothing happened" what I mean is the LEDs (2 red ones for some reason) light up and the cpu fan spins. My HD spins up and everything. However, the screen is never awakened, no beep is heard, HD never starts to seek, just the initial spin up then dead, nothing. So it is a powered nothing. That is what led me to believe CPU problems because that is exactly what happened to me on that same 6800 SLI computer. The P4EE was brand new ($1200 for the 3.2Ghz I think) and all the motherboard BIOS's were not yet setup for the P4EE except the newest ones. And when you order, you usually get the oldest board they have so they can rotate stock, so the board wouldn't POST either until I put in a not-so-old-at-the-time P4 HT and booted it up, flashed the BIOS and put in the P4EE again. That is also one of the reasons why I bought a Core Duo instead of the Core 2 Duo the second time to rule out BIOS being old.

Well the chances of all those components being bad is very small. Maybe fate has it in for you

That ram chip configuration that it needs could be the issue. You mentioned you tried a few but if it is finicky about chip arrangements, then who knows? Maybe it needs all the chips on one side of the RAM stick (I've seen this before).

Make sure all USB devices are unplugged. Make sure the all drives are unplugged. Just connect keyboard and screen and power.

Make sure the system is grounded nicely. You probably already have this covered but it can't hurt to check. Maybe even a special grounding rig for the PSU and MB.

On newegg someone mentioned that this MB cannot run CAS 4 RAM properly. Needs CAS latency of 5.

Others are saying theirs shipped with a dead BIOS battery...

It does require double sided memory. All sticks I have tried except the first one are double sided.

It is in the house now, and as I said, same power supplies power up my other spare mobos just fine.

I havent checked this, but I guess it wouldnt hurt. Although if there is no charge on the battery, it should still boot fine, it just wouldnt save any info when the power goes out... Unless things have changed and I am not aware of it!

Thanks for trying to help though. I did do the normal troubleshooting before my rant I promise!

I dont plan on running graphic programs, but i do intend on running Sling Box and game system emulators, plus i simply like the extra power to be safe. In the past i went for a cheap board, and that got me no where. Now I have a CarPC sitting at home because it is way to slow for me. I think my moms old IBM with 700MHZ and 768 MB of ram feels faster then the M10000. I have already wasted so much money, wasting alittle more wont kill me, if in the end I have a nice stable system. Now that you have wrote this review though, I am very nervous about this board, since in the past you have always given good, sound advice on things.
