That looks like a very cool device. I don't think it will help me with my current issue, but definitely will be a good addition later on for non-GPS devices like my UDOO board. I'll probably hook it up to the Arduino, and pass the NMEA data up to the Android to parse, then using the mock location provider pass it on to maps and my nav stuff.
Very interesting project eric_f. I started my own Android FE too and only just found this post. I'll give it a try and adopt it instead of rollin my own.
Regarding the GPS module. I'd recommend SKG16B, as previously mentioned. I just got mine last week and it's very versatile. It works as a COM device if plugged via USB or over bluetooth. Wondering how do you plan to integrate radio into the front end I see it listed but don't know how to set it up or what sort of radio receiver it supports. Do you plan for it to be a front end to sdr radio?
@bluc I forgot the radio code was in there. It's not ready for anybody but me at the moment. Basically what I'm currently doing is using this FM receiver from sparkfun and it's just sending it commands.
@Sonicxtacy02 I've never heard of the Moneyboard Radio until now. It looks like an interesting device. I would not be opposed to working with one.
As for my GPS issues. They seem to have worked them self out. Maybe an update via the Play Store? Whatever the issue was it seems to be working again. Either way, I'll likely get a new N7 in the near future for dev work.
But for in car, that receiver looks like just what I need. I'll either use their app, or maybe write my own code to do the same thing. Either way that's a nice unit. Thanks.

Have you done any further work on a CAN interface yet? I'm talking hardwired, not looking for bluetooth options. CAN is getting very simple to integrate into now. There is some pretty cool modules showing up as of lately.
Nothing has been done with CAN yet. This was started for my car that literally has nothing electronic. Everything is being designed and built by me. It's taking a long *** time.
I would really like to make this whole project module based so with an Arduino based Android accessory it does the conversion between the front end and whatever format your car has. For me it will be my own design, for others it will be CAN. The front end won't care, but Accessory will do the logic to convert between them.
@bluc Android can't natively use the USB GPS. The companion app takes the signals from the GPS and uses the mock location provider to override the built in GPS receiver and use the signals received over USB. Simple to use, but requires you turn the mock location provider on in your developer settings.
