  • FP as Shell??

Frodo, have you thought about setting FP as shell?

I have just manually done it, and its really really great! It would be even better if you set an option for it in the FP settings!

It loads instead of Explorer as the Windows front end.
You do it manually by changing the registry to load FrodoPlayer instead of Explorer at boot.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
      How about the Wiki?

When you run windows you are in a shell enviroment. currently you are running the explorer shell. You can replace this shell with others that are more efficent and faster.

Here are couple of site for you to find out more info abou them.

thats right, or you can just have one program load up as the 'shell' - super quick!

Ive added all my most used apps in FP's apps, so I can get at them anyways.

My comp is now super super fast (should be for its spec anyways!!).

I can show you how it is done should you need/want it.

I also repeat my question to frodo about the option to have fp as shell.

              here goes then.

              Click START
              Click Run
              Type: Regedit
              Navigate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
On the top toolbar, Click file, then export, choose a filename, then save somewhere safe.
Back in the main window on the right:
              Select 'Shell'
              Double click to edit.
Change the path from 'explorer.exe' to the program path. e.g C:\Program Files\FrodoPlayer\FrodoPlayer.EXE
              Click OK
              Close Regedit

              REBOOT!

When you reboot, frodoplayer will be the only thing to run!

Then it is up to you to configure frodo app's to open what you want. I added:

              Windows Explorer
              MSN Messenger
              Mozilla Firefox (I hate IE)

but you can add whatever you want!

NOTE: I dont accept responsibilty if you mess up your computers!!!!!

That file you saved is your *** saver - should you want your normal explorer shell back from startup, just navigate to where you saved the file (in windows explorer) and run it. Reboot and you will have explorer shell back.

It seems like this was brought up before and the answer was something to the effect of waiting for the bugs to be worked out first. I know once I get my system working 100% I will be replacing the shell with frodoplayer, with or without the option in the settings

well, it certainly seems like i dont have any problems at the moment. Everything seems very very smooth - no bugs. And yea, who cares about the option eh? - the only reason i decided to ask was because I am liking it so much that i feel others would benefit from it - and it would certainly be a bonus not having to fk about in the registry to get it to do so.

Are there any negative effects? What happens if the FP crashes? any way to get the shell back? does a double click on the desktop get it back? I seem to remember that brought explorer.exe back, somtimes....

                        beat me to it

No negative effects that I can even think of - let alone that im experiencing.
But yea, just CTRL ALT DEL, make sure Task Manager opens, click file, new task, type explorer.exe, then hit ENTER.

Bingo - explorer is back. Alternatively, you could reboot, or you could use the above 'new task' function to re-run frodo.

I recall a post by Frodo awhile back that suggested you set up an alternate user and load FP as the shell under that user to try it out. Then if you didn't like it, you'd be able to log in as the origninal user with the Exploder...er...Explorer shell. You could then delete the other if you wished.

                          Edit: Already requested.

Its interesting that it is a lot faster... Could you time this for us on your machine? It shouldnt be THAT much faster. But then again Im not sure how big explorer.exe is or how resource greedy it is either.
