  • The future of Car Entertainment (LinuxICEX)

    I started a thread in the LinuxICE forum for this (which is probably where it belongs). But i though it should be linked here for those who are interested in following or providing feedback/suggestions.

                  Sorry about the blank page. I've had a couple computers go down this week on top of the forum. I'll try to get the forum back up.

                  Basically what I said in the other forum is that I think LinuxICE2 would be debian based with nghost2 and icepanel is it's interface. I believe we can offer a higher level of integration by using the nGhost core framework that is becoming quite mature and usable. The nGhost SDK includes threading, process control, a gui toolkit that will use sdl and opengl, logging, and IPC.

                  LinuxICE2 Platform:
                  Code:
                  * Debian "unstable" base
                  * nGhost Media Center Desktop v2.x+
                  * icepanel persistant dock interface
                  Other modules that should be developed and included:
                  *obd-II client-plugin to nghost
                  *bluetooth handsfree client-plugin to nghost
                  *Navit plugin for nghost??
                  Timeframe for LinuxICE2: Jan-Feb/March 2009.

                  We will still be able to leverage the technologies being developed by the Ubuntu mobile projects, Moblin and Maemo also.

                  I suggested that nGhost2 could potentially have a long life to it. I suggested that it be the main desktop interface until we realize that it cannot do what we want technologically. Then we will be able to look at other technologies like qt-embedded, adobe air, etc for ng3.

                  Of course, I definitely open to suggestions. I believe the stuff we are doing now is pushing the whole paradigm of car entertainment in a new direction. The stuff we are doing throws the need for a frontend out the window and replaces it with true car entertainment software that is integrated tightly with the media player desktop, persistant dock/panel controls, inter process communication, network awareness. And it has been the community pushing the ideas, not just one person or group.

                  rock on!
