  • Linux Ice won't install

So, I have gone ahead and installed the latest Ubuntu onto my car pc.

It is a Intel Atom Mini ITX board, 2 gigs of ram and 260 gig sata drive, standard 7" touch monitor.

Ubunto has installed fine and runs great.
Now I want to install the latest version of LinuxIce. I'm installing from a USB stick, the same way I installed Ubuntu.
But it won't install. It stays on what can be described as a DOS page, the last entry said something about:
Monitor found, but no usable configuration file was found.
And that is where it stays and LinuxIce won't install.

    Any ideas anyone ??

why don't you use the linuxice disc to install? By the latest Ubuntu, you mean 10.10? Is there a reason you actually NEED to use Ubuntu 10.10? As for your configuration error, it sounds like there is no xorg.conf file or there is nothing in it. I had that error when I installed debian squeeze. The latest X doesn't need it so it isn't created.

      Yes, Ubuntu 10.10
I don't have a CD drive on my car pc, hence why I need to install from USB.

So, if I need to edit my xorg file, what information do I need to enter ?

I was using Windows XP as my OS, but got fed up with it crashing and freezing and being too damn slow.

I installed Ubuntu because LinuxIce is based on Ubuntu and I just assumed I needed Ubuntu installed first before I could install LinuxIce !!

I assume Ubuntu 10.10 does not require the xorg file ?

you can take the linuxice iso and write it to a usb drive and then install from the usb drive. << this is what I would do.

As for the xorg.conf file, do some google searches for your error and there should be some examples. It sounds like the file is missing to me. Correct, Ubuntu 10.10 does not require the file, but some programs will (as you have found out).

          Well that is crazy.

LinuxIce is based on Ubuntu, so if Ubuntu does not require the xorg.conf file, then why does LinuxIce. Surely they would know the file would not exist !!

So I now need to create a xorg.conf file. That should be fun !!!

---------- Post added at 07:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:13 PM ----------

Right, I have created the xorg.conf file using the Xorg ~configure command and then moved the file into the X11 folder.

Tried installing again and now it is complaining it can't connect to the X server ??

What is the X server ? and why is it trying to connect ?

---------- Post added at 08:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:54 PM ----------

I guess this LinuxIce is not all what its cracked up to be.

It is supposed to be based on Ubuntu, yet its missing the most vital components.

Time to have a rethink on what to use as my front end software.

there is an error in your xorg.conf file. since your used to windows, linux is slightly different. many things have a concept of networking (hence the trying to connect error, this is not internet connections we are talking about). so if it cant connect to xserver (which is a program running that has to do with the display) then xserver probably didnt start. if it didn't start there is a reason it didn't start. your xorg.conf file is what is to blame. if you rename it to something like xorg.conf.bak and then try it again, xserver should start but linuxice will have the same problem as before. none of this stuff has to do with linuxice. linuxice was designed to work with ubuntu 9.04, many things have changed in the recent versions. if you want linuxice to work, download the linuxice iso, write it to a usb drive and install it from there. i had many problems just trying to get it to run on 10.04. its not that linuxice is missing stuff, its that the recent versions of ubuntu have changed things around. again, write the linuxice iso to a usb drive and install from there.

You seem to be doing a good job at keeping me hanging in here superman.

OK, so I need to know how to fix my xorg.conf file. I would rather do that, than to attempt another install of Ubuntu.

I would have also thought there would be a section dedicated to Ubuntu 10.10 on the openice wiki site.

can you post your xorg.conf file here? also what type of video card does your motherboard have? are the divers for it installed?

I'm not sure what the video card is, I know it is a on board card and the motherboard is a Intel Atom 1.60mhz Mini ITX.
The driver must be loaded, because I have Ubuntu 10.10 currently running.

I shall attempt to post my xorg.conf here. I need to save it on a usb stick first.

                    you can run

                    lspci | grep VGA

to get your video card. you have the same board that i have running in my system, but i don't remember what video card it has.

I shall run that command in a minute, just bare with me, I have to keep running out side to my car

Here is my xorg.conf file, it means nothing to me though, so if I need to edit and replace, just let me know.

A quick Google brought this as my video card:
                          Intel® 82945G Express Chipset

I already have the log, but it is really big, as in lots and lots of text, I don't think it wise to try and post it on here.
