  • Media Engine: .gif for buttons (Skin Maker)

    Hi!

    MediaEngine is realy cool!

But I have one idea, to make the designing of a skin much more easy:
It is very hard to place the .jpg Buttons right on the background, because when they are round, you have to put peaces of the background in the button-picture.
Maybe it is not a big problem, to update the prog. so that you can put transparent .gif pictures as buttons, so that you don't get into troubles with the background any more.

M.E. will not show the animations in animated gifs. I really haven't looked into the skinning question, but I don't know why it wouldn't work. After I get 2.3.4 released I'll take a look at the skinmaker app and see what the deal might be.

because for one, it would be gay. second, we'd have to use an internet explorer plugin to handle animating the gif, which would add another dependency to the program that would bump up the installer size, increase memory usage, and cause numerous other problems. forget about animated gifs in media engine.

i uploaded an updated skinmaker build yesterday that added .gif file extensions to the file filter list. i don't think this will solve much of the problem though, as the controls we use to display the images don't render transparencies afaik. i'll look into this further the next time i have some spare time to kill.

Gif transparency would be ok, but only having a 1 bit alpha mask means you're extremely limited in how you can use it if you want to avoid bad aliasing around the edges. A much better format for doing alpha blended controls would be PNG, which has a full 8 bit alpha channel, or perhaps natively reading PSDs, but I don't know how open Adobe's format is.
