  • a couple questions

first of all, i love this front end. you've really done a great job with this, red. i've tried nearly all of the different programs and this one is definitely my favorite. it's very sleek looking, practical, and i love how iGuidance is so seamlessly integrated. awesome stuff.

just a few things i noticed, though....

    1) i know that the shuffle function is a relatively simple code, which doesn't bother me so much. but when i'm in GPS mode and decide to skip to the next track, it totally ignores the shuffle function and just goes to the next track in the playlist. but if i just let the tracks play through without skipping, the playlist continues to shuffle songs. IOW, i have to keep going back to the media player screen in order to skip to the next track in the shuffle. i haven't noticed if it does this from the main menu or other screens, as i'm mostly in GPS mode.

also, if i exit the program and restart (whether it be exiting to the desktop, shutdown, restart, hibernate, etc.), MI doesn't recall the shuffle function and i have to go back in and click on shuffle again.

any ideas on how to fix this?

    2) every time i try to load a .m3u playlist, the program freezes. could it be that these playlists were created and saved in winamp and not within MI? any other reports of this happening?

again, i just want to thank you for creating such a wonderful front end. these problems i'm having could be specific to me. but if not, i really would like to see the kinks all worked out since you've put so much effort into it already. seriously, this program is only a few steps away from perfection, IMO.

Good stuff, and Thank you for your generous compliments! Yes the shuffle function is pretty weak(allow me to explain) Your right on target with the code, it uses like 4 or 5 lines of code to perform this function which you have probably found out that it doesnt work very well. When someone requested it I had 2 choices, I could have built an entire user class in VB just to perform the shuffle function and it would have been at least 100 or so lines of code, whereas what I used was only several so because not many people had requested it and many people just arrange their music in the order they want to hear it in, I went with the simple code. I probably forgot to add the shuffle code to the next and previous track buttons in the GPS module. I also didnt make it remember if shuffle was selected or not. I will add it to my list of fixes for the next version.

Regarding your playlists; The program is seeing something in the lists that it doesnt like or cant read. Since the program is based around Windows Media Player, I would try to stay away from anything created from winamp. Can you open the m3u file in notepad and then copy and paste it into this thread and I can tell you exactly what is happening. You may be able to just remove some of the unnecessary entries. Check out this post for some more info on it.

        just an update....

i got my playlists to work, but i now have a new problem i've been trying to sort out. i have iGuidance 2.1.3 and everything was working fine since installing both MI and IG about a week ago. then i get in my car to go home yesterday, fire up MI, click on GPS, and the IG nag window comes up!!! furthermore, IG is no longer correctly embedded in MI. i have no idea how this happened since i've done nothing to my computer since installing either program. i tried uninstalling and reinstalling both programs and it worked fine the first time i started MI. but then after that, the nag window showed up again and it quit embedding.

i really can't seem to figure this out. any ideas???

Sorry for all the little issues. I wrote MI and developed the GPS module while using IG 2.1.0. I have heard this problem before. It too is something I have on my list of fixes for the next release.

hey red, thanks for all your replies.

i think i've figured out what my problem is with IG embedding incorrectly. it's kind of odd and may be a problem exclusive to my system. anyway, i have a linksys wireless PCIMIA card and after installing the drivers for it is when i encounter the problem. very strange. i recently installed a new hard drive, so all installations were fresh. immediately after installing the wireless drivers, i had the same problem. IG did not embed anymore. i did a system restore prior to installing the drivers and everything was back to normal. i have no idea why that would happen. any thoughts??? kinda sucks because it prevents me from having wireless internet access.

Here is what I think might be happening. The linksys drivers have probably installed a monitoring program that is running in the background. It is possible that it possesses the same window class name as the ok button, so instead of hitting ok on iGuidance, it is trying to hit ok on the linksys software. The ok message in iGuidance has a generic window class name. Try disabling this background software and see what happens.
