  • SiRF!

Just thought I'd let you in on the latest frontend development

Limited SiRF support is now up and running for beta 3!

I say limited because I've only been able to test it with my BU-303. But it's true, the update frequency is much quicker

I'll keep you posted on a release date

I also use a BU-303 and was using SiRF on 1.1.2. the update was quicker, but I found that the accuracy didn't seem as good as NMEA. The trace seemed to move about on the screen more, even when stationary, and for any known reference point NMEA seemed nearer the mark.
Perhaps it was jut me ! anyone else find that ?

It's tricky because SiRF itself is actually the company that developed the chipset that ended up in a lot of GPS receivers -- including the Delorme, which IIRC is powered by a SiRF SstarIIe. SiRF also refers to the protocol though. Most newer receivers out there support both SiRF Binary and NMEA outputs, it's only a matter of what the software that you're using supports.

It would only make sense that the fine folks at sirf.com would have something to clear up what SiRF exactly is, but alas I don't think that's the case...

No, you'll never get faster than 1Hz updates with the current SiRF recievers, but that's still faster and more accurate than most NMEA devices.
