  • Destinator SDK / DLL Installation and Map Installation

    So i finally got around to picking up the destinator maps...Semsons.com sells them for 109 which isnt all that bad...
    http://store.yahoo.com/semsons-inc/des30noramus.html
    And of course i went to the destinator website and ordered the $50 SDK. First question) Do they mail you the SDK or shoot you a link to download it? I didnt get a link and its been over 24 hours now. I called Powerloc and left several voicemails and nada. I emailed them several times and nada....But my credit card did get charged so they were quick about something! The second half of my concern regards the maps. I made folders in the
    C:\DestinatorApps\Destinator directory entitled USA1 through USA7 to correspond to the map placement of the Destinator maps. In that same directory is the London folder which came with mapmonkey. Now when i load road runner and select GPS, mapmonkey loads but only the London map shows up. I do not see the other maps. Now is this an issue because I dont have the SDK installed? And once I get the SDK, is that just an executable i run and magic happens? Or is their a process for installing it? Is the process explained in the SDK? My last question is about the infamous DLL. Once i get this SDK and load its DLL in place of the one that mapmonkey installed, will i be home free? I have read various places that you have to email Powerloc and get the latest SDK. I have also heard the Powerloc DLL in the SDK works just fine. All this info on these forums is great but its confusing and conflicting enough to make one go mad! I appreciate any help anyone can offer! As a token of my appreciation, here's a southern california joke!
    How do you get a blonde on the roof...Tell her drinks are on the house!

    You have somewhere in the Map Monkey menus ( don't remember where ) an option to switch maps.

    Edit: Actually, it's a screenshot of the menu on the link you gave

      All;
      Here is my issue...So i installed Map Monkey....Bought the maps from Destinator...Bought the SDK from Destinator. I also received the DestDLL_08_05.zip attachment in the email. The file is 1,351,680 bytes with a modified date of Feb 07,2005. I copied the attached DLL as well as the florence map from the downloaded SDK in to the c:\DestinatorApps\Destinator directory. I am able to go in via RoadRunner and view the London and Florence Maps. The "SDK ...Sale " message is no longer there..I also copied all the USA maps into the DestinatorApps\Destinator directory. However, wheni go to switch maps, the only map i see is the London and Florence maps...None of the US, Canada, and Hawaii maps in that directory show....Am i supposed to register or unlock these maps? How so? I have done the
      regsvr32 c:\destinator\destinatorapps\destdll.dll as well...Still no luck...Any help would be appreciated...
      Regards

      I posted this in anothe thread but found it more applicable here....

        If you can't see the maps in the switch map view it's most likely because they are missing the description file. Older versions of the DLL didn't care about this but the new one is picky

        Inside the map folders create a text file called WCE.TXT. The content doesn't matter, it can probably just be left empty.

          Ninja;
          Thanks for the heads up! I tried that and it worked...Now here's the next question for you...When i use the software nroute that came with my garmin USB GPS receiver, it works find by itself. However, when i use map monkey, map monkey doesnt see the USB GPS receiver. In the config.exe, it lists a whole bunch of com ports but no option for USB. Whats the best way to get the USB Receiver working?
          Thanks

            I tried COM ports 1-4 in both the NMEA and SiRF protocol along with the auto detects...Still nothing. I go into the GPS settings and click on "Find GPS" and comes back with "GPS not Found." I know the PC can talk to the GPS receiver because the nRoute software that came with the Garmin works fine. Any other ideas?
            THanks

              You need to tell your garmin device to use NMEA...by default it'll be using garmin's proprietary protocol which doesn't emulate a COM port - Map Monkey (including most GPS apps) doesn't support this

                Ninja and all....You are right...as usual! So i did some more searching on the net and it turns out that Garmin does not use NMEA. They have some proprietary protocol that their recievers communicate with their software...So that was a nice $130 experiment that didnt fly....SO i went and bought a Delorme Earthmate GPS. People here seem to be happy with it...I installed it and it created a virtual com. When i go to device manager and look at Human Interface Device, it shows up as:
                Delorme Earthmate GPS com Device (com3)
                Then in the map monkey config screen i use Com 3 and autodetect baud rate....That doesnt work. I use the baud rate that is in the earthmate instructions, that doesnt work. When I go in the GPS settings in Map Monkey and click on find GPS, it reports GPS not found. When i use the street atlas program wich came with the earthmate, it picks up the earthmate and the satellites pretty quick. Does the GPS not found correspond to not finding satellite or not finding the USB receiver? I think its the latter because it comes up instantly....This is driving me nuts! I cant wait to get these issues resolved...Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated....
                Regards
                Ali

                I think i will also put this in its own thread because it can be educational to people with similar problems. Plus it wont be burried in a deep thread like this...

                  Some good news and some bad news....Good news is that it is kind of working. I deleted the old drivers and installed the new drivers from the link to delorme ..Then I created the virtual port on com 9. After telling the map monkey config to look on port 9 and autodetect the baud rate, it seemed to recognize the GPS unit. The reason i know this is because my cars location came up on the map whereas before it was showing somewhere in San Francisco. So then i entered a route and started driving and nothiing happened. In the current location field, the street that I was on came up but it would not change. The MPH does not change from zero either. SO clicking on menu, then settings, and GPS status shows "GPS not Found." Then if i click on the GPS settings on the top left hand corner of that screen, it takes me to a screen that has find GPS and set GPS. When I click on find GPS, a few seconds later it says in blue "GPS found'. When i click on set GPS, it reports "Com Port is busy." And it stays in this config. It seems that every time i load map monkey / road runner and select "GPS" , it will show my current location and thats about it. It will not route, track, etc...

                  SO thats where I am at now....If you have any ideas, please feel free to shoot them at me.
