  • Problem with MediaCar... DirectX 9 related?

    recently, i can't load mediacar. i've tried uninstalling it, deleting every trace of it, even from the registry, and then reinstalling it. and nothing. before i reinstalled it, it would load, but then just crash when i tried to do anything with it.

    the only thing i can think of is that i recently upgraded to the latest DirectX.

    anybody else encountered this?

    i uninstalled DirectX 9 and went back to the basic DX 8. no change.

    i uninstalled some software i recently installed, including McAfee Virus Scan, and now the Setup will load, but alot of the text is missing, and most of the options don't work, and the program won't close via either the OK or CANCEL buttons. so i have to manually shut it down through the task manager.

    i've attached a screenshot...

          From my limited knowlege of program, it seems that you may be missing a dependancy. I'm assuming you updated your .exe from mediaengine's site. Maybe double check to see if one of the programs you uninstalled accidently uninstalled a necessary dependancy.

            Maybe upgrade to 1.9.1b first.
            I'm not sure, but there were some issues with 1.9.0

              I get the same error when I'm trying to use MediaCar with XP and my USB sound (philips aurilium). Do you also have the aurilium. I didn't find any better solution than installing win 2000 instead. But if you find a solution I would be more than happy if you could tell me how.

                the screencaps show 1.9.0, but i have also tried with the updated 1.9.1b. i have had it installed and working properly in the past, with no problems at all, that's one reason i'm so confused by the problems now. it's obviously not a problem with MediaCar, it's probably something wrong/missing from my windows installation.

                i'm not running any usb sound, this installation is just on my desktop, so i can try out new skins and settings before i decide to use them.

                i would hate to have to reinstall windows on this machine just to get it working again.

                edit- does MediaCar use Java in any way? i'm not using MS Java, i'm using Sun Java and just upgraded to the latest release. could this have anything to do with it? i'm trying to remember anything i've changed lately.

                  i fixed it!

                  i googled "error number: 2147221231" and out of all the results, ONE included the advice to run Windows Script 5.6 which installs "Microsoft® Windows® Script containing Visual Basic® Script Edition (VBScript.) Version 5.6, JScript® Version 5.6, Windows Script Components, Windows Script Host 5.6, and Windows Script Runtime Version 5.6"

                  works perfectly now.

                  from what i read in searching for an answer, some programs change or overwrite ocx or dll files with no notification, and that sometimes this will adversely effect other programs. i also recently got rid of some browser hijackers and a low-threat virus. it's very likely that either the virus, hijacker, or the removal process itself altered or removed the ocx or dll file(s).

                  i talked to someone who knows more than i do about programming. for what it's worth, here's what he had to say...

                  A ClassFactory is used in windows automation and interfaces. (Your app is interfacing with a third party API -> the MediaCar API.)

                  My guess is that the person who developed that app just deployed the exe and not the other dlls and ocx files needed.

                  or

                  You have those ocx and dlls but they are not registered. (use regsvr32.exe to do this)

                  or
                  the programmer who wrote that app allowed unhandled exceptions to happen.

                  -what could the programmer do to not allow unhandled exceptions to happen?

                  Depends on the language you use.

                  Code:
                  //C++

                  try {

                      if (doStuff()<0)

                          throw Exception();

                  }

                  catch( Exception e )

                  {

                      //show an error message here

                  }

                  Delphi

                  try

                      doStuff;

                  except

                      //if an error occurs, exception will bwe cought here

                    I'm getting the same blank settings screen when I use 1.91.

                    I just got my machine up and running but MediaCar keeps crashing everytime I click on a button. Version 1.90 at least gives me crash errors, 1.91 just freezes and can't hit close. I installed all the programs that Frodo recommended including Windows Script 5.6 but still get crashes.

                    Is there anything else that needs to be installed besides MediaCar...I couldn't find this file:

                    "with some updates for the brushed metal skin of Febsperenza : http://www.media-car.fr.st/DOWNLOAD...te_for_V1.9.zip"

                    but I did get the brushed metal skin thats about 12MB...are these two files the same?

                      Don't confuse the issue by adding other skin files! Does it work with the default skin? If not have you done what gutterslide did?

                        Doesn't work with default skin either, I did add the microsoft files that gutterslide suggested, twice even!

                        i installed SP1 with the direct9 updates but wouldnt think that'd be a problem. i created a user account w/ admin priviledges, should I just use the regular admin? any other suggestions?

                        i'll retry today and post.

                          i think my problems all started because of a low-severity virus and some browser hijackers. whether or not they are directly responsible or not remains to be seen. but just for the sake of safety. download and run HijackThis. scan, save the log, then copy and paste the log file here. don't check or fix anything.

                            Looks like something played with the scripting...virus or anti-virus?

                              OK, so I found the culprit, it's my M-Audio USB 7.1 soundcard. =(

                              I switched over to the internal 2.0 soundcard and no crashes! Unfortunately everyone here recommends a USB soundcard for better sound...did those of you get any MediaCar crashes afterwards?

                              So I either gotta find a new soundcard (for 4.1 sound) or stick w/ the internal one, eeek!
