  • XM & Sirius Merger

Well, there have been a lot of questions about how hardware will be supported with the new XM/Sirius merger. It appears that your existing hardware will work to access the new system when completed. This is great! Meaning any XM or Sirus hardware will be able to connect to the new service when completed. No more choosing choosing Sirius just because of the Howard Stern show ect And for us CarPC Users, any old Satellite hardware will work that you hook up to your CarPC, WHEN the merger is completed that is.

Here is an email I received from XM this morning:

    February 20, 2007

    Dear XM Radio Subscriber:

We want to share with you some exciting news: Yesterday, in Washington DC, we announced XM Radio will be merging with Sirius Satellite Radio to form the premier digital audio service.

The merger will create a satellite radio company that will provide consumers across the country with more and better premium radio programming. The combined company will be able to compete better in what has become a very complex and dynamic entertainment market.

Where today our exclusive contracts mean you had to choose between baseball and football or Oprah and Martha Stewart, the new company will seek to ensure that in the future, you will be able to access both companies' programming. And, once we are fully integrated, those of you who have factory-installed satellite radio will no longer be limited to the programming provided by the exclusive satellite radio service chosen by their car manufacturer.

      Neither at the moment.

At some point, if and when the merge goes through, I expect new hardware to roll out. Sirius uses high elliptical orbiting satellites while XM uses stationary satellites.

That statement sounds to me like existing hardware will be able to access the combined service, when completed. It makes no mention of having to replace the factory installed hardware to be able to work.

The Howard Stern show would be the reason I wouldn't choose Sirius.

Anywho, will the price to subscribe be the same, I wonder....

Why do you think I went with XM?

It sounds like they cried all the way to the bank about it too

Regardless of stern tho, IMO sirius has superior music channels. It'll be great for sports fans when the merger completes tho!

Stern hasn't made them profitable; they're still bleeding money by the bucket load. I know my comment made not a difference to them, but I felt better saying it.

I spent quite a bit of time listening to both and for the kind of music I listen to I felt XM was superior. To each his own, of course.

I must say +1 for sirius. I have listened to XM and Sirius, with sirius in my car and on my satellite tv, and the music channels are much much better on Sirius. The 80's, 90's, Top Hits, Classical all have much better selections of music. I don't listen to sports radio at all, so it was a no brainer for me.

And I too hate Howard Stern... I have no idea why they push him so hard in their advertising.

                          Sterns sucks IMO also.

I have Sirius because of program selection. They all use compression so unless a receiver here or there does a better job in decompression, it is inferior to regular FM.
