  • AVG showing trojan virus in RoadRunner.exe

Anyone else running AVG's free antivirus here? With the latest virus definition update it's popping up and telling me there's a Generic3.RBB Trojan Horse virus in RoadRunner.exe

Was in the car tonight and when it's AVG updated it deleted my Roadrunner.exe file, even after re-downloading roadrunner (while sitting in Publix parking lot) it still pops up with the warning and I couldn't find a way in the program to make it permanently ignore the file. I'd click IGNORE on the warning popup and it'll go away but next time I try to run the file it does it again.

Just updated AVG antivirus on my laptop here and it's doing the same thing when I try and run roadrunner. I'm sure it's a false alarm but something in the RR's .exe is setting off AVG's alarm with the latest definition updates.

Guino: Anything that can be done on the coding side that you know of or do I just need to figure out a way to have it ignore the .exe?

Finally just disabled it in the car for now.

This has been posted several times over the last two years! Your scanner software is set too tight!

There isn't a virus in RR...

Honestly, unless you're planning to download and try lots of email attachments and new applications in your carpc, chances are you're going to be worse off using the anti-virus than by actually catching a virus. I only use anti-virus for periodic scans -- the live/real-time scans make the computer much slower than any virus/spyware ever would.

My best guess is that the anti-virus is catching on UPX ( www.upx.org ) which is such a known tool it should at least have the decency of actually de-compressing the file before actually judging it.. a way to find out is to actually decompress RR manually using UPX and seeing if it says anything about it.. but as I have said many times, it could just be all the API code that is in RR flagging all sorts of warnings in the anti-virus.

Thanks Guino, I knew that there wasn't a virus in the .exe, but was just surprised that it just started after a recent definition update. But you're right, I'll probably just uninstall it or leave it disabled for now, with my computers I've always been a tad bit paranoid but I have never had a virus on any of my machines so it's been worth it! : )

@wfs1: Yeah, I'm aware of the previous virus scan issues but mainly wanted to see if this is something specific to something AVG did. Plus there really aren't any options to customize it that much, I tried turning off Heuristic scanning with no luck and didn't see any other options that'd help, but thanks.

As far as the Windows problem, try right clicking on the file, under the general tab see if it is "blocked". Click the "unblock" and apply.

So is there anyway to fix this short of uninstalling the AV and reinstalling RR? Like the other people here, I've been using RR for a long time now, and this is the first time I've run into this problem. Very annoying. I guess I can look for another AV program. I'm getting the blocked access error message as well, with nothing under properties that I can find to fix it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

AVG might also have tried to "repair" it or something, I just downloaded the RoadRunner zip again and copied the rr.exe back into the directory, you shouldn't have to totally reinstall all of Road Runner again.

Disabling AVG should fix it for now, hopefully a future virus definition update will fix this issue, but for now we're gonna have to either uninstall or just disable AVG, shouldn't have to reinstall RR, just down the main RoadRunner.exe file again and copy into your directory.u

does AVG have an exclude setting? for example in norton anti-virus, i can exclude a directory, or a file from being scanned.

I tried recopying the roadrunner.exe file over to the folder again, but every time I tried, I got the AV popup. Even after I uninstalled AVG, I still received the Windows access error message. Soooo, I made a backup copy of all my files, uninstalled AVG, uninstalled RR, rebooted, reinstalled RR, which then worked fine, and finally copied all of my files back into my RR folder. So far, so good.

As for my AV program, for the time being, I'm going with Avast's free version. I guess I could just solve the problem by paying for an AV program, but I'm too cheap! I may try to reinstall AVG at some point in the future to see if the problem has been fixed.

Wow I am having flashbacks from high school when I was writing a computer program and compiled it then wham anti-virus tells me I have a possible virus in the program I just wrote and just laugh and turn down the virus scan settings and all is good.

Unless I'm totally missing a menu option I haven't seen any sort of exclude settings in AVG to have it completely ignore a file or directory. It looks like you can specify certain file extensions to scan, but it'd kind of defeat the purpose to take .exe off that list.....

And when the error dialog box pops up the IGNORE option is apparently just a temporary/one-time thing.

I may check out of AVAST's one, I've put AVG on all my computers and have had no problems with it at all, will never go back to Norton or one of the other big name bloated scanners.

In AVG if you go into the test center then select tests. then either the complete test settings or select area settings and uncheck the "use heuristic analysis" at least I believe this is the setting that may be causing the issue. At least its something to try if you are having this issue.

I checked the BETA version with AVG and it didn't say anything wrong about it.. maybe the last release coincidently had a sequence of data bytes in it that made AVG think it was something else.. feel free to download the latest beta if you're having trouble with it.

Im having trouble with latest version too

AVG either deletes the file, or windows refuses to load it. I have disabled Heuristic searches, but I am not going to remove my AV program, is there a way round this yet?

                              EDIT:
Turned AVG off temporarily and now I get the windows permission error and file won't run, even when I re-download the file and try it new

Has anyone tried contacting AVG to get an exception setup?
