ive thought about doing that, but dont think ill actually get a real world test as a lot of things would be missing like navigation software, active gps and internet. I really want to know how well those machines can handle everything i have running in the car.

I thought about buying one just to test it and have something i can guage a base line performance to compare other UMPC's too, then take it back.

Well legally there is nothing wrong with doing that. I have done it myself. I ordered parts online, but needed the system up and running now. So I bought a "loaner" at CompUSA for 3 times the price, used it until the real part came and returned it.

I try not to do it because I think they will blacklist you. I try to use cash so that it isnt credit card traceable.

Just make sure the one you want to test out they have more than 1 in stock. You dont want to be responible for you getting the last, so they order another and then when you return they are stuck with 2. I know they are a big company, but $1k-$2k return can look bad on their sales record to the big boss.

I would just use their demos. Take the install CD's with you, and start installing stuff. Since they work off of commision, just tell them the quasi-truth that you are testing to see if this machine will perform well enough and you will remove the software when you are done.

Just dont make the same mistake I did! I wanted to get the digi-pen out on the tablet I was trying out (bought online but wanted to see/feel in person) but they have an acrylic thing over it, I could twist the laptop but to get to the pen I just needed to twist it some more and it was caught on some usb thing, so I unplugged that thing and all hell broke loose! The sirens went off and it made my fingers blue! I just explained what I did and they were frustrated but no harm done. Moral of the story, dont unplug the USB devices already on their demo models!

Yup. What UMPC do you want?

I use Road Runner, PC navigator, phone control on my Everun. Its a tidy, mobile solution.

            What questions do you have?

I don't usually watch TV in the car! That was a test.

I am making a review video of it running iDrive and PC Navigator with media. Will be up in three or four days I suspect.

I havent tried any flash skins (URL? I'll try one for you.)
On the Everun (the lowest power PC you can buy these days!) it works OK. There's lag as programs start up but once things are running I have no problems.

I would use a more powerful UMPC but the beauty of the Everun is that you can grab and go and use it as a handheld PC. It also last 4 hours on a charge so in general it doesn require power cables. Oh, and it supports A2DP so you can stream into a BT head unit too. Totaly cable-free solution. Love it.

Hey Carrypad-chippy, did u get a chance to make a vid yet?

I was at BB the other day playing with the new Samsung UMPC and to be honest was quite disappointed in its performance with just windows. There was some serious lag with just dragging windows around the screen. Not sure what the deal was with that. It also took quite a while to launch media center, but not extremely long. On my computer it loads pretty much instantly.

Still on the fence though until i can actually see RR running on one of these or something other type of app that acually gives me a since of how fast the pc is or isnt.

In the mean time i got a ipod touch to hold me over for music while in the car.

I just happened to run into this thread and I do have the Q1 with the 1gig processor, 1 gig ram. After reading this, I went and installed RR with IG 4.0 via bluetooth for testing and had no problems. This was running off the battery running at normal peformance. I had vista installed when I bought it, but found it to be too laggy. i reinstalled XP tablet and runs smooth as a 1.5 via mini itx. Just my 2 cents.... I think I will test it on max peformance and plugged in to really see it perform. I can shoot a video..but honestly I won't have time until this upcoming weekend to do that.. let me know...
