  • Unable to Get GPS to Work "Properly"

So I've just hooked up a CarPC again after a good year or so, and its been working great for the most part. I'm using the RR Front End, naturally, and Void skin. The only thing that I can't get to work properly is the GPS. The only way I can get RR to not crash is to not set the port in RR. If I don't set the port in RR, it opens fine, and iGuidance embeds into the skin perfectly, and even works smooth. However, since I can't set the port in RR, I can't use the "extra GPS" features like showing the current heading and speed in the main window and can only see that info in the iGuidance embedded app.

I have tried it with and without XPort3 and regardless of what I do, setting a port in RR causes it to crash. Any ideas?

Here is my Debug with the port only set in RR...

I've had nothing but bad luck with Xport3, it causes my PC to bluescreen. I would look at using a different program, I'm use GPSGate (which isn't free btw) and it works great.

I have been using Xport for like ~>2yrs and have never had any probs. There are different versions of it, some vers work for some and other vers work for others...

Interesting. Time to get RR and start diagnostics.

Edit: Works fine for me. All standard calls. Read interval is about 1100ms, around 100-400 bytes with a 1024 byte queue size. 100ms faster would catch every update.

It's just that the weird thing is that even with the COM not set in iGuidance, thus making the COM available for RR (this is without a splitter), it does the same exact thing.

I don't think the issue is with RR. I think it's hardware related. There are plenty of people that use Xport with no issues. On my hardware I get BSODs.

                    Try this.
Config Xport3 as you normally did.
Open 2 hyper terminal windows and connect to each to the available com port. Do the 2 split out the same data?
                    - now connect RR to 1 of them and hyper terminal to the other.
                    - then connect iG to one and hyper terminal to the other.
                    what is the result?

As for Xport3, I'm using it since first version coming out. This is one of the solution that cure the BSOD from Delorme Eathmate receiver and Routis 2004 (ig V1)

Deleting the ziplocater.dll solved the issue, thanks for trying, guys!

Sorry for the threadjack, but yeah I never really thought much about the GPS side of XPort. It's more likely that the COM port emulator (the driver) for the GPS isn't totally stable with the calling methods I use (asynchronous I/O, wait signals and such). The data is ready at the virtual ports in under 5ms, but it may not be the best for compatibility. I think I'm going to start ripping code out.
