  • RR and vista? It appears faster......Gotta be the hardware....

On a larf, I loaded up RR and the latest void skin on my HTPC (which doubles as my PC for now).

I'm running a modified Vista on it with no troubles so I'd thought I'd bang around with RR and see what issues popped up, just out of curiousities sake.

RR is blistering fast on my new vista machine compared to my car pc running xp.......wha!?!

I'm sure it must be because my car pc is a p4 2.26 Ghz and my HTPC is a dual core 2.4.............gotta be.............

It can't be that RR runs better on vista.........................................can it?? Nah, can't be.

    But then again..............................

I think I'll install vista on another HD I have lying around and give it a go on the car pc just to see if it's the hardware or the OS. It just can't be the os, has to be the hardware. Dambit! This isn't the first time my incesent need to tinker has opened up a can of worms.......

I just have to do it now. Well, once I find some time from the house renovations..................wifey needs 'er kitchen back......................

Anyone want to comment? (useful comments )

    Cheers

    Very Very interesting indeed......

It can't be the 200Mhz difference, as that would not be noticeable. And I doubt it is the dual core either, as RR is not coded to take advantage of that. Hmmm

I installed Vista Ultimate on this PC a few months back to test, and see... It's a Legit copy, well sort of hahah! A friend got it for $20 at the college bookstore.

On my machine I found it to run slower. I ran some bench mark utility on XP before I formatted and installed Vista. Then ran the same test on Vista (After saying YES, that I really did want to download it, and YES I really do want to install it, and YES I really did want to run it ) , and over all it was about 30% slower.

After installing RR, I was getting strange incomplete skins, and bleeding of one thing into another. I never did quite resolve that, and I switched back to XP after a week. All this being said, I just find it interesting that RR is running so much faster for you.

Please lets not turn this into a Vista FanBoy thread, or Vista bashing thread either. There are thousands of other forums on the net for that! These were just my experiences with it when I tested it out.

Could well be the new hardware, a duo core 2.4 ghz is much faster than an old P4, much more so than just the mhz rating would suggest.

Yea on most of the CPU tests at Toms Hardware site the dual core 2.4 is twice as fast as the P4 2.26.

        The dual core is fast.

John, I'll try and do some testing this weekend and post results.

I'm running home premiium (I think, can't remember)

My observations are purely arbitrary personal impressions for now.

Vista seems to take longer to boot up than my service stripped down car pc, but when clicking on RR it opens so fast it shocked me the first time.

I'm also running LS's latest void skin but have no issues so far. In fact, void transitions are startlingly fast also. Again, this could just be the "better" hardware, or even a placebo effect on my part.

Are you using DFX when you get bleed thorugh? Maybe it's something incompatable with the DFX code and vista?

Keep in mind, I'm just throwing out ideas here. Kind of a "frigging around" excercise more than anything as I have no intention of running vista in the car.

Just personal curiosity picking at me.

It would be interesting to get guino's thoughts on this though seeing how he could probably give a better insight to RR and vista cohabitation...........

          Cheers

The last work on this from Guino is that RR is not supported on Vista, use it at your own risk. This makes sense to me for a few reasons:

            - It's is a well known fact, that Vista is more CPU intensive, and does have a larger foot print
            - The lack of drivers for older devices we use, such as XM, Sirius, HDRarios, and so forth are not readily available as well.
            - The advantages it offers such as the Arrow skin, will never be seen in the car really.
            - When I press the radio button, I really don't want to see "Are you sure you want to listen to the radio"? ! Hahaha (Sorry had to add that one )

good thing you can disable it.

I'm on vista and the only problem I've had is iGuidance autoswitch not working.

if you can manage to run navimon2 on Vista, it will sort out your problem.

                        That's cool. No offense taken.

I just turned the UAC off on my HTPC and I never get that annoying nag screen............

I'll post details if I find any (bugs too) with RR and vista.

As I said, I'm just "goofing around with it" out of curiosity.............

I doubt you are going to get the pause on speak to work. One of the new, and nicer features of Vista, is that each program has its own seperate volume control.

What would be needed is a way to see when iG speaks on its level, and then adjust the separate level for Winamp.

                              Interesting............

Makes me wonder how a front end like FreeICE would behave in vista as it uses WMP.............
I may DL an copy and find out although I'm betting it wouldn't be a big difference (if any at all)

Curiousity is gonna kill that cat again..............
