  • Visualizations As Background?

Hi all, my first post, and before I'm pounced, I swear I've searched high and low before posting!

...my question is this: when I first started getting the s/w ready for my new (and first) install, I could've sworn I came across a youtube where someone had RoadRunner, and had milkdrop or some other visualization running (fullscreen) transparently behind their skin. They also had a background image, but that also let milkdrop be seen underneath.

Can this be done? I'm currently running the Digital FX 4 skin with MilkDrop embedding seamlessly, but I haven't figured out how this might be done.

If i remmember correctly, milkdrop does NOT support transparency, you have to use AVS to get the effect. Somebody correct me if i'm wrong.

If I understand from what I saw, it wasn't milkdrop that was transparent, it looked like it was simply open as a maximized window behind RoadRunner, which was itself transparent. But it could've been AVS; it certainly looked cool!

You can run it full screen in RR, with a hitch. There can only be one "Application area" defined in a skin, and the Vis would be it. So it could run full screen on any app that does not have an app area defined. (For instance you can have it on the GPS screen, where you GPS program is the application) Also the Visu is the top layer, so you are seeing RR behind it.

When the Vis is set to use transparency mode, the visu can also be clicked through, so all buttons will still show the rollover state and respond to being pressed.

To see it in action full screen, in the DFX skin, press and HOLD the Visu button on the music screen. This will take you to a full screen visu, with just the bottom row buttons. You can see that the visu is on top of the bottom row buttons, but they still woprk. On that screen the "power button" toggles the visu on and off. Tapping the right side of the screen goes to the next visi, and the left side the prev visu.

Note: To change the transparency level, see the help file that came with the skin.

Awesome, thanks John! ...and is that milkdrop? Or is it AVS, as treetop & spawn noted?

This is what I want too, but I don't think it can really be done currently the way I want it. In my mind, the entire interface should be a transparent OSD (just like monitor controls, the OSD for some TVs, or the interface theory of LinuxMCE). The background should always be the current application (ie: the VIS, a playing video file, full-screen GPS app, Coverflow, Picture slide-show, etc).

That is using the AVS Visu's, as mentioned earlier, Milkdrop does not allow transparency.

Milkdrop has "desktop mode", so if you could make RR truly transparent then you could do it (as well as play full screen movies and such behind the on-top RR interface). Unfortunately RR does not allow itself to be transparent to the desktop currently. That is a feature I would definitely like to see though.
