  • Audio but no video playback using Media Player Classic

I have been having this problem for a while now. When I try to play a video in RR, I get audio but no video. I get a small sliver of the video in the upper left hand corner of the screen, where the aspect ratio is. If I touch the screen, it gives me the video broken up in several sections of the screen. Changing the aspect ratio doesn't help. I have tried changing the video settings in rrconfig, and in the stand alone WMP classic. If I use the WMP outside of RR, I can see the video fullscreen. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of RideRunner (07/01/09), and it still hasn't helped. I looked at the configurations in the ffdshow confg, also. I also tried using different programs to play videos in Riderunner (WMP, MCI built in, etc) to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone else had this problem? Thank you for any help you can provide.

    WMP Classic... whats that?

there is WMP (Windows Media Player)
    and

    MPC Media player classic

    lets assume WMP

    what OS do u have...

i would suggest another player, Dolby audio license is ONLY allowed is Microsoft applications... we do a trick to disable the microsoft codec, and then FFDSHOW or ac3 filter cant take over...

check the video files, audio type...what is it... make sure that its set to use ffdshow for that codec...

    or use MPC

but we need to know what OS u using, cause MS really enforces it in vista.win7

the video issue is very odd... video drivers

tell us MORE about your system!
    -Thanks

I have seen issues with playing video in MPC or Built-in inside RR when using OLD VERSIONS OF FFDSHOW. Maybe you downloaded FFDSHOW (original project) instead of the latest FFDSHOW tryouts ? Or maybe you have other codecs installed that are taking priority over FFDSHOW. The rule of thumb is that if your video is showing up abnormally (parts, wrong colors, upside down etc) is that you have an incompatible, bad or old codec installed. You may want to check out the FAQ that talks about using FFDSHOW.

        Thanks

Yes Mitch, I meant to say MPC, not WMP classic. I have Windows XP installed. I have had it working in the past on this same system. Guino, I think you might be right about having an old version of ffdshow. I will try to download the newest version, and see if that clears things up. Please let me know if you or Mitch have any other thoughts. Thanks again!

Well, I downloaded and installed the latest ffdshow. The video is still not working, though. I'm not sure what's wrong. Of course, I might just be over thinking it. I have tried both MPC & WMP, but neither one works right. The only part of the video I can see is at the top where the aspect shows up when you change it. If I touch the screen anywhere, I can see the video where I touch also. Soooo frustrating!

Yeah, I tried it outside of RR, and it works fine. On a side note, DVD's play fine in RR using MPC, just not videos. I have all video formats checked, and they play with audio.

Can you please test the following:
-Open MPC OUTSIDE RR (without RR running)
                -Click View->Options
-Under "Output" Try changing the DirectShow Video option

You'll have to change the option save, close MPC and try it in RR -- keep doing it until you've tried all options or until you find one that works. Still this is very likely a codec issue -- did you UNinstall the OLD ffdshow before installing the new one? Do you have any other codecs/packs installed ? I myself have had codec issues so bad the computer wouldn't even play most of the videos.

Hmmm, well I followed your suggestions guino. When I changed the DirectShow Video Option to VMR-7 (renderless), the video played, but it was real choppy. I'm not sure that I have DirectX 7 installed. I might try installing the newest Directx, and see if that fixes the problem. I'm pretty sure that I don't have any other codecs installed, but I will double check. Thanks for your input.

BTW, iLists only works if you have Directx 7 and above installed, correct? Thanks again!

*Edit* Well, I checked, and I have Directx 9 loaded. So, that's not the problem. I thought it was since I've never gotten iLists to work.

Any ideas of why the video is so jumpy now? At least I can see it, and its full screen. Only with MPC, though, still doesn't work if I try to use the embedded WMP.

Did you try using VLC or MSVid ? It does seem like something is really broken on your windows install. The choppy video and the issue when playing video in overlay (default) are more than likely symptoms of it. You can check your codec/filters installed with this application.. you may even try to fix it (but I HIGHLY suggest saving a restore point before anything)..

Edit: I also HIGHLY suggest you check/update/reinstall your video drivers.

Cool guino, I will try those suggestions. I have recently updated my video driver. I have headrest monitors, and my old driver wouldn't allow me to clone to them, only extend my desktop. Once I updated the video driver, it worked. I'm not sure if that created the problem, but it might have. I think I will try the program to clean up the codecs, first, to see if that fixes the issues. Thanks again!

Okay guino, I have tried everything you suggested, and still no fix. I updated my video driver, installed the latest Riderunner & installed the latest build of ffdshow. I also ran the utility from http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm and it showed 0 errors to my codecs. The video works perfectly with everything outside of RR. Last night, I was playing around with it and got it to work correctly. When I restarted RR, though, it went back to the way it was. I noticed that when in video, if I hit the button to skip to the next track, it looks like it opens another session of ffdshow. When I minimize RR, I have ffdshow icons all along the bottom of my screen. Does anyone have any other suggestions. I tried doing a debug, but I have never done one before. All I get is like 5 lines. Thanks for any help!
