  • what antenna/setup to use w/ ADS instant FM

I have the ADS FM and cannot get constant good reception. I tried following someone's recommendation of soldering a cable which allow me to connect to the car radio. This also goes in and out. Is there anyone using this unit successfully in their car?

    Thanks

for sure u need that mod, with the wire, inside it doesnt do very good
and im sure in a car...

even with the mod.. antenna issues maybe there
in your car, what kind of antenna you have, in glass?? its it amplifed? did u power on the the amplifer....

course ur in USA, HD Radio would do u better, its tuner made for a automotive use... but some of the antenna issues would remain, ie amplified....

from my understanding, the ADS unit does not work well with the glass mount antenna of any vehicle so i disconnected the cable from the glass mount. Yesterday i was getting superb reception while in the city. As i was driving back home i began losing reception and when i was home i could not get anything. That is until i move the antenna or play around with it.

My point is to know if there is an antenna i can get to add to the unit. I like it and it works well "when it works" - i think a good antenna will resolve this issue..

not sure what you mean by amplified as the glass antenna is the factory antenna provide with the factory car. I'm not sure how the factory installation is setup?

I did, however, go to radio shack and purchased an amplified antenna (which i can return for full refund) connected it, plugged the ac adapter into an outlet and depending on where i positiioned the antenna, it would work great but that's unacceptable.

I have a strong feeling the usb fm radio is getting feedback from the pc, wires, hubs and the likes. What i'm considering doing is getting a long usb extension cable, running it to the back of the car and plugin the fm radio by itself back there. we'll see if this works...

the pc might be killing fm too

but 99% of all on glass antennas are amplified

the factory radio, 1 turns on a amplifier remotely mounted in car
            or 2 contains the amp

if your not using the factory radio, to use that antenna, you have to turn it on

maybe ask a car audio shop

              @mitchjs

i kepted my DIC and factory radio intact. I disconnect the antenna from the factory radio and connect it to my USB FM unit and nothing.

What i may try is extending the cable to the usb fm as far away from the pc/cables/hubs and running a connection to the antenna.

are u keeping the factory radio ON??? when ur trying to use the antenna

it also can send the power up the antenna wire (like vws do, and u need an adaptor)
you might want to do more research on you car...

Hi, I ordered an ADS InstantFM stick and I have a glass mounted antenna on a VW T4. There is an amplifier that fits with the factory radio. Maybe this kind of adapter will work.

thanks, i will look into this on my car forum...

in the meantime, i'm going to also try distancing, using another antenna i'm borrowing from a friend, and better soldering connection to the cable.

I too am using the ADS Instant FM. I was just curious if anyone got this to work well with a Hacked Antenna.

I am debating on using the car stock antenna as well. Mine is not in the windshield, but on top of the car I belive (2007 Chevy HHR). I am not sure how to make the two connect though as they are clearly differnt sizes.

                          Thanks,

                          Rog

I believe many people have soldered a cable for a bigger antenna on the Silabs/ADS modules -- I have done it and it helps a lot.
