  • Clean Up Poll

We need to know if there any users still using some old (no-longer supported) software with RR.

Basically, I would like to remove the code from the core for these two items:

    1-PhoneControl.NET
    2-MapMonkey

If you are still using any of these, please mark which you use accordingly, otherwise, please vote "No, I don't use them".

The idea is to remove those from the core code no matter what, then if there are some users still using these, we'll make plugins for them.

    Thank you for you support,
    Guino.

I think if you are going to remove the code, there should be plugins made for them. Otherwise it goes against the 'all old skins will work with the new versions statement you are fond of'

Did somebody wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?

I would think that Map Point should be added to that poll. It is pretty out dated given all of the choices in navigation now.

Removing it, could clean up a LOT of code in the core for sure.

No, just making a valid observation.

I actually agree with the streamlining of the core code, however in doing so we need to do it in such a way it doesn't break existing systems/skins.

The iDrive skins have support for both (now all three) of the proposed removals.

Actually, Mappoint hasn't been in the core code for many months now -- it's already a plugin and I know there are still people using it (including myself).

I do intend to make plugins to reproduce any functionality removed from the core (i.e. Phoco/MM), but this gives me an idea of what kind of priority to do this. You'd have to agree that if nobody uses something, there's no point in making a plugin for it -- I mean, what good will a phoco skin/screen do without being able to obtain/license/use phoco itself (it'll be just a blank screen in the software) ?

The skins on the other hand, can always be used (hopefully) for any (newer) feature that replaces the older one.

Very good point I used the Phoco screens & skins for the MopbilePhone.net plugin with a few tweaks. I think Phoco was one of the hardest things I ever had to skin way back when, as only certain buttons would work on certain skins.

Phoco went out of business at least a couple of years ago now, and since that time, anyone that has purchased a new phone, means it is more than a bit obsolete. It's pretty sad for the people that actually purchased the software from them.

It may be worth seeing if Gizmoq and yonu can use another of the new solutions to work with their phones before taking (wasting) the time to code a new plugin.

              Alternative?

So what is a good alternative for phonecontrol.net?

Yeah, I'm transitioning to MyMobiler for my cell phone but my CarPc has built in cell service that works well with PhoneControl, so I keep it as a backup to my cellphone. I could live without it, just have to remember its OBSOLETE and change the rest of my skins.

I already started on a phoco plugin, but I probably will need help from someone to test it...

Still using MapMonkey, It's reliable and the maps are not too far out of date. However, I've just bought a copy of Mapfactor PC Navigator 9, and it seems to be a good product (so far).

I would not be too distressed to see MapMonkey go, would be nice if Mapfactor could be plugged in.

I know this thread is not really the place, but how about some DAB support for us here in the U.K.? I have a dabmate USB jobby, and it works really well but its front end is rubbish. are there any DAB tuners that will work with RR?

Making a plugin for mapmonkey should be fairly simple. The winamp TV plugin can work with some DAB tuners.. you may want to try it out...

I'll give it a try over the weekend and let you know.

I recently got a copy of mapfactor navigator9, it's good, but not as easy to use as mapmonkey.
