  • "The attempt to power off PC failed"

I've just upgraded to the latest RR, and now cannot shut down the computer using the power button. Nothing happens at all! When debug mode is enabled, nothing gets written into debug.txt at that moment. I only could find this message in the system events log: "The attempt to power off PC failed".
This happens almost every time when RR is set to run as a shell instead of the Explorer.exe. Very rarely it does shut down, but I couldn't find the exact conditions, which make it work.

If I return shell back to the Explorer.exe and start RR just via a shortcut in Startup menu, the power button seems to work, though I believe it still failed even in this mode at least once.

It worked perfectly with the older version of RR (I believe it was 2009-11-30).

Is there some setting for the new version of RR, which could prevent Windows shutdown?

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP3.

Look at the first FAQ in the DFX5 thread - that could be your problem..

Do you mean this post talking about the ONEXIT event?
Doesn't seem to be the case here - I use a pretty simple skin "eLite Lite", it doesn't have any ONEXIT event handlers, and I guess in case of that event there should be something in the debug.txt, while I don't see anything.

Yes, that's the one. Sorry don't know what else it could be.

from 2009 to 6/1/2012, there are TONS of new things in RR

but nothing specifically designed to prevent shutdown

you have to solve this, since you might be the only one with the issue out there
any application, can tell windows not to shutdown...

make sure u have nothing else running
          no additional plugins
and test with the simplest skin, carwings, you should enable the shutdown menu, in rr config
under general, page2, exit options, set to show menu

but it sounds like your PC is unable to do the command to power it off, thats why is shows up in system log
          -Thanks

            OK, good to know.

Well, worth a shot - I thought maybe someone else had this.

I have the "Exit" option there.
And yes, I don't have anything else running, except the regular system stuff, and I use a very simple skin (maybe will try the Carwings as well).

Exactly! But the thing is - I have the same OS and software as before, with just two changes - I replaced the HDD with an SSD, where I cloned the system to, and upgraded RR. It could be the SSD, I guess, but I doubt it, especially taking into account the system does power off when the Explorer is running.
Well, I guess I'll just be doing more tests trying to figure out the cause of this issue, or maybe will just leave RR to run the standard startup way - it's not that clean as when running as a shell, but it seems to work.

PS. That's why I prefer not to touch a working system! Even if it might be running the outdated software, it works!
