  • RR hangs on "Starting Speech"...any ideas?

I was adding a couple picviewer skins to my system and discovered RR hangs when starting.
When it gets to the "Starting Speech" message on the loader screen RR hangs. Looking at task manager shows it as not responding.
I didn't change anything other than adding a couple .skin files.
I reran the RR setup and nothing changed.
Anyone have any ideas? Are there any logs written as RR starts showing what it's doing? The system has been working for the last year or so without any major issues (that weren't somewhat easy to fix)

    My setup is:
    Intel d510mo
    TinyXP
    RR 4/1/2013
    Tried it in Carwings

    Thanks,
    davidk

Maybe your speech was not installed with TinyXP

You mean speech was not installed with TinyXP? I've been using the same TinyXP CD since I first installed the carputer.
I did a search for *speech* and did find some directories and dll's. It had been working just yesterday and, seriously, the only thing I added were some .skin files.

Now, I don't use speech or weather, is there a way to disable those things from loading at startup? I see a weather directory in the RR plugin directory and have deleted it on a test computer. RR loaded a little quicker by not pausing on "Starting Weather". I don't see a speech plugin. Is speech supplied by MS?

If I don't find a solution I'll probably end up just reloading the whole thing again. I'd like to avoid this if possible as I don't really have the time to spare.

      Thanks,
      davidk

I meant speech, yes. I'm using the same board as you are. Carwings works fine. You may want to move away from XP and migrate to W7 ...that's what I did. It's more stable than Xp and works great with the D510MO boards , although I couldn't get 4 channel audio to work like I did with XP. No biggie.

Have you tried to uninstall RR and removing the skin files you added?

I tried removing the skin files and no change. I've not modified the Carwings skin directory so as Mitch says "Have you tried Carwings?" and the answer is yes.
I didn't uninstall RR but I did run the 4/2013 install again and no change.
            I'll try uninstalling RR tonight.

As for Win7, I didn't want to pay for the license. I have tried it and got most things to work. I'm sure if I'd stuck with it I could have made it 100% but everything I need is working in XP. I think it was the touch panel that was giving me fits in 7.
My setup is rather basic in terms of what it does. Basically music, radio, gps, video and now pictures. No bluetooth or internet or phone integration so XP is enough and familiar.

            Thanks,
            davidk

Mine does it too since the February update. Turn on the RR Debug, and kill RR when it hangs, then open up debug.txt and it'll show you exactly what process was hanging up. Post up a copy of the debug.txt for the folks here to examine.

I did this a few hundred times and if I remember correctly the hang wasn't SPEECH, but:
              DirectDraw Count: 1 - []

Like Sonic said after you've made a backup copy of the debug.txt to upload here, let it run and do its thing for about a half hour and it should finally get past the error.

Can't disable it "loading speech". I doubt that its actually the speech configuration loading, more likely it freezes on the next step in the loading process, as SAPI isn't that intense.

                    Sometimes I hate computers.
DirectDraw is exactly where it stopped for me as well.

It turns out winamp wasn't starting. I thought I'd start winamp for the drive home to at least listen to something and discovered the winamp service would start then immediately unload it's self.
Now, I don't know why winamp wouldn't stay started. I did some searches but didn't come up with anything definitive. Since I was running an older version I uninstalled it and installed the latest. Now it all works again.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Here is a debug from before discovering winamp was the cause.

if you see DirectDraw, speech was successful, usually DD count is like this: 21:19:46.617: DirectDraw Count: 2 - [] [{67685559-3106-11D0-B971-00AA00342F9F}]
this means the DD is available...

right after directdraw init, the CORE is ready to go...
next is loading of global plugins then skin...

if I could get my winamp to fail like you guys, im sure I could fix the hang
